I really like my Remington 740 in .30-06. Inherited it from Grampa Forrest, really, and he had killed many deer and elk with it. I have taken a few coyotes with is, along with two deer. It ain't pretty by any means, but three generations of my family have taken game with it. It now sports a synthetic stock and a receiver mount Williams peep sight. It is a great rifle for 100 yards and under, where I take the majority of my deer.

Well, if you want to count it as a rifle, my favorite is my Savage .22/20gage over-under. It was my grandpa's and is an outstanding grouse gun.
I've got 4 other rifles and while I am happy with them, I can't say that one is my favorite.

1. Winchester model 94 thudy-thudy. Belonged to my Dad. Point it in the general direction and it's on. Killed my only Elk and Deer with it.
2. Savage model 99 in .308 with an internal rotary clip. Have had it for years.
3. M16, .223 cal. single or full automatic, accurate to 400 meters. Have not shot one since the 70's.

Gotta go with musicman on this one. Love my .280 Browning A-bolt stainless stalker. One of the most accurate guns right out of the box that I have ever shot in my life. Bought the exact same gun for my brother only in a .308 and that is his primary gun as well. On another note I see a couple of you like Savage's. To me those are one of the most scary guns I have ever heard of after having one blow up on a nephew of mine. Peeled the barrel straight back in to two pieces. After that I have always been leery of those guns. Don't know if it was just a freak accident or not.

My, favorite rifle is a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm. topped with a 3x9 Zeiss conquest. My dad shot a lot of critters with this rifle and now it has been passed down to me. I put the new Zeiss on it as the old Redfield wide angle didn't gather much light. If you don't mind a little recoil this is a hunting machine.

springfield 1903a3 sporter, 30-06. A friend of dad's did the work and dad gave it to me as my first big game rifle. It is sweet! 7.5lbs, 20 inch barrel, custom lightweight stock, and a leupold varix2 3-9. 150 grain partition handloads are 1 MOA consistantly. Not for sale:)

My Thompson Contender Pistol with the Super 14, 22lr barrel with a Leupold 2x scope. For deer hunting tho, I like that Super 14 35rem barrel with the 2-7 power scope. And for target/coyote shooting, I like my Super 14 7mmTCU barrel

BUT...you said rifle, so, would have to be my Ruger M77 stainless 308win with a Leupold 3-9x40 scope...Got that gun new when I was 12 years old. Worked very hard that summer helping put up LOTS of hay lol..

Daisy one-pump. It'll shoot your eye out up to about 30 feet.

On the comment about the Savages, I had a Browning (shotgun) blow up in the duck blind a few years ago . . .

My fav is my Ruger M77 SS 7mm Mag, with a leupold 3x9, loaded with 170 Sierra Round nose, and 64 1/2 grains of 4831 I think. I am on my second setup of these because someone stole mine 2 years ago. I put down both big bulls, 1 cow, and 2 coyotes, and 1 porqepine. I also enjoy my Ruger M77 .338 with a leupold 3x9, but it is still a virgin.

Elkman,

You have the old M77 with the tang safety? My .300 Win Mag has it. If I can see it, I can hit it. Topped mine off with a Vari-X3 3.5-10.

Mine love the Barnes X 150 grain, and the 200 grain Match King. I don't plan on using the Match King bullet on game though.

Andy,

My .338 has the old style 2 positions saftey. My Stainless 7mm has the 3 position, where it locks into the bolt, and doesn't allow the firing pine to move. The 3 position is much better!
People tried to give us crap for using a round nose bullet, but we don't want to poke a hole, we want that bullet to go in and cause some damage. I shot my avatar bull at 45ft behind the shoulder, it went through 1 rib, and blew up a go portion of the liver before getting stuck in the hide. It was a huge bodied bull. We had to tie his hind legs in, so he wouldn't fall out of "Babe".

My dad has a vari-x3 3.4-10x on his M77 7mm mag, I think he paid $180 for the scope in 1980. What a deal.
