Interesting thought the amount of economic impact to GLs from this would be higher than 148 million annually.
2003 was a not a good year for them.
Don't think I could do it personally for a living, too boring trolling all day, and plus I would probably get sea sick as lake michigan can be one rough inland sea at times.

Hal, this isn't the "Glory days" of the '70s and '80s. We are fishing a declining fishery. And it is a "mixed blessing". Do you like combat fishing??
But, remember, there are zebra and quagga mussels to fight, round gobies, and foreign zooplankton effecting the fishery, as well as lampreys and alewives (sawbellies) which were foreign to the lakes too. Short term, the close range outlook isn't great..... but I do hold hope for the future.
Also, remember, sports requiring active participation are declining in popularity. People would rather buy a new Game Station or Nintendo than get off their fanny. That adds to it.

Here is another big new risk to the GLs and very close to where I am. See link below. Romeoeville is 40 minutes from my house. If the Big Heads get into Lake Michigan (some are probably already there, they found one in a downtown chicago marina this spring which they are hushing up) then Huron,Erie, and maybe Superior could be at risk. lake ontario is probably safe, can't get over that falls right ?
I think there are less fisherman now than in the 80s and 90s, definitely less snaggers. Kids are into other things these days unless they are brought up in a non urban environment.

Hal - FYI - ALL of the GL's are "attached" - Lake O. is NOT immune, thanks to the Welland Canal (in Canada) - (How did you think ocean-going ships get into Chicago?)

Oh yeah I forgot that. Well they are probably some already into Lake Michigan. They found one in a downtown chicago park lagoon that attaches to Lake Michigan and are trying to figure out how it got there. They think some body planted there. I think it swam there from the I+M Canal. Hope for some real cold winters to maybe kill them. How could asian carp survive a harsh GLs winter ?
