Oh, were you gone???

Schwarze is a good enough description - the Germans use that expression to describe all "non-Germans" without being specific.

Oh, well, I THOUGHT it was too nice, peaceful and quiet around here! Welcome home anyway.

Thank you Bobk but I am exhausted it was long days and two international time changes of 8 hours within 6 days.

This link will show you Kurpark in Bad Homburg which we stayed acrosss the street from. I jogged through it early each morning sunday through wednesday. What a beautiful place as you will see in the pictures. Thought I was in heaven jogging through it at 6 AM each morning it was so beautiful and peaceful.

My German friends say Bad Homburg is one of the richest towns in Germany where the millionanires come to retire. I could beleive it checked out some home prices at a real estate office 1.5 million euros plus and lots of high prize cars on the streets, BMW, Mercedes etc.

Not a bad looking park. Boy, you sure took a "quick trip"! Hardly worth the expense. What did you do - get in two days of work in all that time??? I would have had a worse time adjusting going over than coming back.... those Eastern time changes kill me - where going West doesn't bother me at all.

So I gather you weren't able to do any fishing. And I'm pretty sure you didn't get any shopping in, either, or you would be showing us some of the "exotic" gifts you picked up. Too bad - the European economy needs a boost, too!

Anyway, welcome back.

Hey Bob. I have a quick cure for traveling east. Well, works better for me since I have a bit farther. But I always take a red eye flight nonstop to London or Copenhagen, then onto Frankfurt from there. And I stay awake the whole time. By the time I get to Germany, it's nighttime again, and I'm so damned tired, I go right to sleep. Wake up in morning (their morning) and am fine. Has worked the few times I've been there so far.

Work time
Sunday 3:30 - 10 PM
Monday - 8 AM until 9:30 PM
Tuesday - 8 AM until 7 PM
Wednesday - 8AM until 10 AM

About 34 hours of work in 4 days.

Going east is much harder than going west. Go to sleep for at least 3-4 hours when you get there then get up and go to sleep that night on their time.

Except it was a miserable day there last Saturday when I landed cloudy heavy rain and windy I slept from 11 AM saturday to 7 PM still felt tired laid in bed watching CCNN International and BBC watching the EU Enlargement ceremony and other world news, got up early Sunday morning and walked the town and park.

All shops closed at 2 PM Saturday and are all closed on Sunday except for restaurants. Never got or found the fly shop in Bad Homburg either. But with it being a town of millinaires doubt if I would have found any great deals there any way.

BTW, we had to fill out a profile of our selves for the conference. Of the 38 people that attended from 20 countries I was the only fliegenfisher !!!!

Beatutiful place though Bad Homburg bring many Euros though if you go. LOL

The results of my german trip are not good.

1. Got a lot more international work due to this meeting. No raise in pay that I see right now either, thats how big corporations work now, at least the few survivors on corporate staffs like me. Its not like the roaring 80s and 90s large staffs any more believe me.

2. I did not learn anything useful on german fly fishing while there due to the intense business meeting schedule. The only thing I learned was from the web sites I visited on german fly fishing before I even went on the trip. I could not get the local fly shop on the Saturday I landed since I did not know exactly where it was in Bad Homburg, it was raining cats and dogs, I was exhausted, and the german exchange student I sat next too on the way over said that all shops close at 1-2 in afternoon on Saturday and are closed on Sunday. Those were the only days I had any chance of visiting it with the schedule we had.

3. I only saw the sky line of Frankfurt since we are in the surburbs (Bad Homburg) about 15 miles outside of it. Never got into the town where I wanted to see how it had changed since 1968 when I was there for 6 months in the USAF.

4. I got a back pain in my right shoulder from going coach both ways. 17 hours of coach is no fun believe me. This pain is gone now though.

5. The only think I had time to buy on the trip was some candy for my family ($50 at the duty free AP store) and for me I saw some nice small after dinner type small cigars. Bought two tins of dutch cigars thinking they would be mild.
Last sunday night I decided to try one, well it was not mild, and kicked in my asthma which made last week bad. Went to doctor on saturday and am now recovering with 4 different medications. I think I will give these cigars out in the coming fly swaps since they were intended to be used when I fly fished. I can assure you I will not be using them now though. Thats $ 15 down the drain for me.

So the trip and its subsequent impacts has been anything but fun and no new FF knowledge gained is the worse part of it !! LOL

Only good thing was that I got to fly over Scotland, Iceland and Greenland on the way back in clear skys and got a good look at them from 25,000 feet. You should see that Greenland, an immense glacier thats what it is. Iceland has glaciers but lots of greenery also. Scotland is all green of course !!

Thats my final post on german fly fishing for a long time I hope !

Hal - don't you know ANYTHING about cigars??? Dutch cigars are made out of dark, VERY strong Turkish or Russian tobacco! Always buy Havana when you are out of the country. That's why I'm mad and hate Castro... Good Havana cigars were dirt cheap and readily available under Fulgencio Battista! And so was good rum!! Even the GREAT 25-year old stuff! Great old bars and sidewalk cafes, with fantastic Spanish guitar music, fiestas celebrating EVERYTHING, etc. I have more fond and great memories of that swingin' town, but this is a "family oriented" site so I'd better shut up!!!

True story

In 1979 I worked for Gulf & Western Industrys corporate staff out of NYC, remember the big conglomerate ? it had - Paramount Pictures, Simon & Schuster, Manufacturing, Apparel, Financial services, Agriculture, Natural Resources etc.. Well I had to go to Valkenswaard, Holland where we owned BV Wilhelm Cigars and review the companys operation. Was there two weeks got all the dutch cigars I wanted from the President too. No problem smoking them back why I was a young man. LOL

Now forget the dutch cigars the Henri Wicklemans are strong and probably kicked off my asthma.

But I had like 10 minutes to shop at the Frankfurt airport duty free and the only cigars I saw were these.

So much for Dutch cigars, expect to see them in the flys you receive from me in upcoming fly swaps. LOL

You know the funniest thing about this german fly fishing thread is that when you enter germany fly fishing into google - this thread comes up as the second hit. LOL

Perhaps we get some german fly fishers here who I was not able to discuss fly strategy and techniques with on my corporate trip from hell. LOL

Auf wiedersehn from Schwarzer Geist !!

LOL Bob. Yeah, I've heard similar stories about Cuba from my mentor in school who also was a Korean (and WWII) vet. What did they do, send you guys there in droves or something? I know when I was of "age", he told me a bit too much. LOL. But I had "open" ears to all of it.

Yeah Hal, there really isn't alot about German fishing period. Fly or other styles. I had a hard time finding any info, until I got a connection with a local citizen who belonged to a FF club. Would be nice if we could find some who'd sign up.

Well, it I knew Karl Herman's e-mail address, he'd be glad to bring us up to speed. But he's "Americanized" now, and a NE Flyfisher. But he got his start "auf Deutschland", and told me where to go, and the best places, when on business trips. A good guy, but I haven't seen him in over 14 years now. (Also a Corporate Director for IBM, last I knew!!)

I think they have mostly small stocked and some wild in their rivers but I don't think these rivers are filled with trout. They seem to have a number of lakes though that are stocked and loaded with some nice ones.

No salmon or steelhead runs in Germany what a bummer. LOL

I do believe (and not 100% sure on this) that all the stocking is done by the fly fishing clubs there. This was a good 17 years ago I was there fishing for them. Plus, my German wasn't THAT good. Good enough to live there, but still had problems at times. But believed they had said they did the majority of stocking.
