Youth Reel
      #11448 - 03/15/02 03:15 AM

I need some help selecting a reel for my eleven year old son. I want to introduce him to float fishing and maybe some some spoon fishing this year. My dilemna is this: I have a brand new 8'6" casting rod that I would like to give to him. I don't want to put on a bait casting reel and invite fustration. So I'm wondering if a spin cast reel would be the ticket. Any suggestions would be great, brands ect...

Just my opinion...I've been fishing baitcasters since I was his age...Put a 4500C3 on it, adjust the spool brake a little tighter than normal (for you) and put the kid out back to practice. Betcha he'll suprise you with how fast he picks it up. Just encourage him, and show him how to undo his own birdsnests and overruns...heck, I've been using them for over 30 years and still manage to nest one up every now and then, right Marty? [Wink]

Well
Baitcasters are good, [Wink] never learned to use on too this day, I started out with an old zebco 202 push button,When I was getting more serious about fishing 9-11yrs old, switched to a spinning reel.

This is my suggestion! For One, ..cheaper if it gets lost, damaged ; too replace,Dad won,t steal the reel and load it with power-pro. I think spinning reels are easier too use, and hook just as many fish, as baitcasters.
After years of a spinning reel, you,ll wish ya started out on a baitcaster, like I do.(wish)
I am still using spinning reels, and do just fine.

All Good suggestions. Fishing time too me is an important part of learning, so on that note ya may want too go with the spinning reel. [Big Grin]

Greg can give ya tips on netting...he is apparently a specialist in this field.. [Big Grin]

I agree with greg, never too young. My son is 9 and fishes a Shimano curado 201 very well, on a 7 1/2 foot casting rod. Make sure you set him up for success.. give him lots of room, and lots of attention. Tanner (my son)started in the back yard with a 1/2 oz. lead ball, casting to a towel on the grass... took a few days evenings but he caught on pretty quick We would have a contest to see who could hit the towel out of 10 casts, it relly helped my casting too [Big Grin] , now he only uses a spinning rod to side drift with. And his steelie count this year is wonderful.

Why yes I did aunty, but drive a stick now, is your boat an automatic, or a stick?

Okay go with the baitcaster!! Should be better in the long run.
