Too, too easy, MF. Last year I happened to run into a high-school buddy of mine. Wanted to take me out to an OP river that "just screams" with chrome year 'round. I asked if I could take my Polish friend and he said sure, bring him.
Don't know about his definition of "screams" but we did get into a few steelies. We were standing around, BSing, when WHAM! something took off with my bug. I was using 8WF line on a 9' 8wt stick and this thing heads down stream for the rapids. Fly line: gone. Here comes the backing. I do the only thing I could think of - grabbed the backing with my hand and twisted. (Cold hands + upset fish = very sore hands!)
Anyway, the fish gets just to the upper end of the rapids. I'm leaning back for all I'm worth, I've got the backing wrapped around my hand, and the rod is pretzled. After 15 minutes of this stand off I asked my Polish friend to wade down and spook the fish, maybe get it to run back upstream or something. He walks down stream and says he can see the fish and man it's the "biggest fish he's ever seen". He uses his rod to swipe at the water a couple of times, looks at me and yells, "OK, you can pull now!" Like, what have I been doing for the last 15 minutes????
I lean back a little further, the circulation is gone from mid-hand to finger tips, and I can just hear my 10 day old rod beginning to crackle. Arthur is down stream waiving his arms in the air, yelling, kicking at the water, and telling me to pull harder! My friend is beside himself laughing at the two of us. Next thing I know my line is slack but as I'm reeling in I notice it's coming at me faster than I'm reeling. Then, boom, sharp u-turn and the leader snaps.
I never did see the fish (probably a chum) but from that time on whenever one of us would hook anything we'd yell, "OK! Now, PULL!"
-------------------- Chaos, panic and disorder. My life is now complete.

Hmmm, I wonder which one that is for Magicfly?????
THat's tough for me. I think mine would've been on the Duc a few years ago. Had one on that had my 9wt bent over in two. Fought the fish for a good 30 minutes with no real headway. Never got to see the fish. Took me downstream so fast I didn't have time to get back into boat to follow him. Had me way down into the backing. I think what ticks me off most is I NEVER got to see it. Fought like a steelhead. Just never came up for a roll. Finally the line went slack when I did finally get to the boat (as I said, no time to get in). Reeled all that line in (which sucks on a fly reel) and had frayed my leader to pieces.

Hooked a nice fish on the Klaskanine river while my very young daughter was on my back in one of those kid back packs. Well this area of river was very, brushy, a lot of low overhanging trees etc. Well - the hunter instinct kicked in and went chasing this fish through all kinds of stuff, meanwhile my poor daughter is getting the ride of her life. The fish managed to get in a really dangerous area and finally common sense kicked in - my daughter was on my back! I then decided to break my tippet at that point. Well both dad and daughter where a little scratched up from the fun. Of course got the riot act from the wife when we got home - bad daddy! But honey we had fun (that did not work). That was a long time ago, my daughter has actually gone fly fishing with me after the fact. We even did the Deschutes together - that was a good trip! Now she is doing the High School thing so I'm currently out of the loop - bummer!

We can all 'feel your pain;' you have to hook a fish before you can loose him/her.

Black Ghost has a hard time remembering all those lost fish. He had the WORST streak of "0-fers" I have ever heard of!!! (As usual, he entertained us on the "other" board with his tearful recountings of "fish lost"! Every gory little detail, whether we wanted to hear it or not!!)
(He is always crying about something! Poor baby!)
