Many of you don’t know me but I’ve been at this game (two-handed rods) for awhile. You can say I’m a “Skagit Caster” I’ve fished the Skagit since the late 60’s. Also I have work in different fly shop around the area making custom fly lines. Bob Meiser from Oregon has asked me to check out different lines for his rods. He makes some very nice rods for Spey fishing. So I’m going to share it with you guys/gals what type of line (dry/sink-tip) work best with his rods. I’ve learned from some of the best line makers in the Northwest Ed Ward and Marlow Bumpos. I know everyone cast a little different.
Here is my first report for you:
Meiser 5/6/7 11’7
I’ve tried many lines on it (I know every one cast different) Windcutter, Midspey, Triangle Taper, SA Spey Short Head dry lines the best line I used was Hardy Mach 1 Salmon WF 8/9 (39 ft. head, 324 grains) hands down the best dry line.
Remember all my sink-tip lines are 3 x the rod length not more then 3.5 x the rod length. With 2 foot taper on both ends. Total belly length of 38 ft. all were tried with (Ed’s style 136 – 146 Grains) 10 ft. sink-tips.
Now sink-tip lines; any were from 420 – 480 grains works great. 450 work the best!
I also tried Rio Scan (tip head) 7/8 with sink-tip.
Total grain weight with tips was 480 grains.
So for dry line I’m going with the Hardy Mach 1 8/9
Sink-tip I’m going with Rio Scan Head (tip line) 7/8 with Ed’s sink-tips.
I hope this help’s you out,
Brian

Thanks for posting that Brian. Glad I asked you to do it now. Gives me some insight on what to use WHEN I buy one of Bob's rods. He does excellent work. Wonder if Fred got his "label" idea to Bob yet.

In the PNW there are Fly shops that carry them. You can look at them on "House of Hardy" web-site. Our you can go here to buy them http://www.speyshop.com/

Yes I know about Aaron's shop in the middle of the NA Spey Major leagues, out here in the Gls we are in the A or AA minor spey leagues. Most fly shop personnel have a glazed look on their eyes when you mention Spey fly fishing. LOL
I should live in the PNW well I had my chance I suppose, in the mid 80s, should not have turned down that interview with that little company called Microsoft !! True story. The princess said the only place she was going Chicago. So thats where we went from South Bend, IN.

Jerry, I couldn't agree more! Aaron is one of three fly shop operators who knows which end of a spey rod to put on the reel. He's also an EXCELLENT spey instructor.

Yup, I am going to go see him once I'm able to cast again. He's going to show me the side arm cast to help my shoulder out.
