One month from today I will be on Prince of Whales Island near Whale Passage fishing cohos mostly from shore. At this point all I know is that we will be predominately using spinners. Anyone ever trek around in those parts and have a tackle tip for me? I'm not getting much info yet from the guys Im going with and I need to start getting geared up. Thanks!

If your fishing from a boat, alot of the time they will just put a slice of harring on a 6/0 hook and jig with it, the silvers hang out in huge schools chasing bait fish. Are you going on a charter? If so they will probably have all the gear you will need.

No charter. Bunch of guys are driving up from here (Im flying to Ketchikan and will hook up with them at the ferry). But a couple of them own some land in the area and have wall tents and a small cabing. The way I understand it is they have a zodiac for crabbing and a little fishing but most of the fishing will be done from shore up the river a little. If I had to charter I wouldnt go. I enjoy being on my own even if it means I catch less fish.
Anyway, I have fished cohos from a boat in the Queen Charlottes so I am familiar with the salt water tactics, just looking for tips on the fresh water. How bout that Corky Rag Kenai? Or should I just stick to hardware such as Marty suggested and stay off the bait?

Ron, Flies! After that, Blue Fox Vibrax spinners and Pixee spoons. If bait is legal in the river system you are fishing, roe works awesome, just drifted with or without a corkie. I'd lean toward the hardware though.

3 riv if your looking to bank fish silvers use that corkie rag setup I have on here with a chunk of roe. You would have better luck at the kasilof from the bank. The kenai is hard to fish from the bank, but the pinks will be here so any thing you throw out there will catch a fish. good luck, look for a mt dew willie, thats me

Im geared up now. Vibrax, Pixees, Crocs, corkies, yarn, lead, and all the miscellaneous tackle, etc..2 spinning rods,1 baitcaster and a 5 wt fly rod, waders, boots, float tube and fins for the dollies in the lake, cure, buckets and containers for curing up a ton of roe. Not to mention clothes and sleeping bag and personal affects. I'm glad my buds are driving--no way I could ever get all that crap on the airplane! Oh yeah, and between the 6 of us we have 5 120 quart coolers and ten 64 quart coolers to bring the fish back in. Overkill I think, but that wasnt my project.
TheLatest reports from the area are that the fish are in, bigger than usual and real pissed off when they get hooked.
I am not sleeping well!!

Vibrex and Pixies are pretty reliable soldiers for silvers. I've had good luck in the salt trolling with Mepps Cyclops and Dick Nites. Dick Nites can be a bear to keep down in a hole in a stream but they're pretty effective. Crippled Herrings are good to use because you can cast them a mile from the beach. Good luck and have a safe trip!
