Has anyone been doing well on the MF since the water came down so much? How about you Rustler? Have you been out in the last week?

no I went bank fishing last thursday and I have forgotton how to bank fish. I went at pengra and nobody was there and did not fell like going elbow to elbow with the dexter crowd.
I took Saturday and went on a float down the Umpqua for Shad. Ended up catching a steelie and trout and small mouth bass as well. had fun. How are doing on the raging M.F.? lol

That sounds like a fun float. I hear you when you say you don't feel like combat fishing there by Dexter. I've never had a desire to do that either.

I'm not doing so well now that the levels have dropped off to nothing. The hole that was producing for me is just way too shallow now. I'm in the process of figuring out where they might be holding now. I went out this morning but had no luck other than a few trout. Do you have any idea what the water temp is up to now?

no I sure don't but I can tell you where I think the fishing is good of the M.F. and fewer people fish it. And that is just downstream from Dexter dam. The river splits , on the right channel there is a (mabye) three hundred yard strech that bunches steelies thick. Gotta cross the river, waist deep but good fishing is there.
Have you tried the Mckenzie at all? the water level has steadily been dropping to noraml levels it should be real good for steelies right now. The water level is now at 5.12 that is the lowest I have seen it so far this year. still is 1' to 1.5' higher than normal summer lows.

You wouldn't be talking about the left channel by chance would you? Because the right channel is the main one and I've seen lots of people in there. If you are talking about the left channel, I've been down there once way back in January I believe. It forks again about a hundred yards down and it was actually on the left channel of that second fork that I caught my first steel.

And between u, me and the fence posts, where both of those channels link back up and join back up with the main one can be pretty good as well. At least it was when the water was up. The last two times we've floated that, my in-law has tied into a native there. Too bad he's out of town for the next few weeks and I won't get a chance to head out there and see if they're still in there.

As far as the Mckenzie goes, I'm clueless where to start. Any suggestions on spots with good bank access?

Yeah for combat fishing and excellent numbers the "hatchery hole" and the water fall hole below leaburg dam is good. Basically the first mile downstream from the dam has alot of really good bank accessable water. Key is to drive through and past the hatchery, across the dam, to acsess the place.
I am moving into a new house and have put fishing on hold for a while. Problably want be till first of July before I am back into full swing again. Good luck out there let me know how you do.

Good luck on the move. I also have had to scale back due to work constraints. I may head out this weekend provided work doesn't interfere.

One question though, how long does the summer run normally stay good on the MF?

There is really good summer stealheading on the Mckenzie until the dead heat of august starts and good fishing starts back up again after mid september. October is very, very, very good on the Mckenzie for steelhead. They get agressive that time of the year. The numbers should be good this year as well.
It's just that late august is tough to make them bite.

That's good to hear. I suppose I'll have to start fishing the Mckenzie then. Are there any spots with good bank access other than just below the dam? Or is it mostly float only?
