I decided it was time to go visit the zoo up at foster last night. We launched the Willie at about 3:30 pm. On the first tailout below the launch I hooked and lost a steelie on my first cast. 10 minutes later I landed one. As we moved down the tailout we spooked about 50 fish.

The rest of the float was dead. we did see a ton fish laying in tailouts but none were even the least bit interested in biting..........

Lots of fish in, but very few biters.

Since the steelhead fishing sucked and it is the weekend I went to a small farm pond this morning a educated about 50 crappie........

Hey Willie.

So is it a zoo all the time up at Foster? After reading your post, I checked out the location and that's not a bad drive up there. Would it be worth checking out during the week? Is there any good bank access?

Oh, and take it easy on them poor crappie next time.

Slow,

Its not a Zoo all the time, but you will always have people up there fishing. Sometimes during the week it isnt too bad.

There really isnt a whole lot of bank access. From deadline down you have about 3/4 of a mile of river to fish. I guess you will just have to go chek it out. There are lots o steelhead up there now.

Substitute the top mile of "the Rogue" during the spring salmon season for 'S. Santiam' and doubt anyone would know the difference. Well ... save for one major point.

During the spring run (now) it's gotten so 'bad' the OSP demanded the Fish and Game folks close the river (top 1 mile) at 7 PM every evening. Tired of busting up fights, et. al.

Sheesh.

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but "combat fishing" is simply not appealing to me. I realize I may pass up some good fishing opportunities because of this stance, but the trade offs are not worth it to me. Tangled lines and flared tempers would surely douse the exhilaration of a strong head shake on the other end of my tackle. I would rather pull a solitary fish from an unmolested tailout any day of the week. Is that so wrong?

Is it possible to wade the river in that area?

redhead,
Its pretty much a bank show up below the dam. Mid week isnt too crowded usually. Last repoert I got from up there sounded like it was pretty decent fishing.

Thanks Willie. I've spent the last 23 years in MI growing up and chasing steelhead, trout and salmon. I'm moving to the Albany area in early september and I can't wait to fish those rivers. I'm just trying to get some info on area rivers and where I can fish. I've got a pair of waders a a fly rod and alot of energy. I can't wait to get out there.
