Lake Michigan - Brown Trout Stocking
      #123167 - 07/16/04 04:33 PM

This is good need more browns stocked in south lake michigan. Better chance at those 20-30 pounders that are out there but only caught occassionally.

Tribune Staff Reports

Brown trout have been stocked in Indiana's waters of Lake Michigan for the third consecutive season.

The annual stocking is the result of a cooperative agreement between Illinois and Indiana after Hoosier anglers requested the DNR include browns in its stocking program.

Approximately 46,000, 5-inch browns were taken from the Jake Wolfe Hatchery in Illinois and planted in the Whiting area on Lake Michigan.

Indiana's hatchery system lacks production space to raise browns, therefore one of the presently stocked species would have to be sacrificed to make room for home-grown brown trout stockings.

"We are hopeful to continue this arrangement into the future as fish become available from Illinois," said Lake Michigan biologist Brian Breidert. "When fish are stocked in Lake Michigan they do roam, so this arrangement benefits both states."

Breidert said the browns were stocked in Michigan City last year, and if they become available in 2005, they also will be planted in Michigan City waters.

More than 120,000 browns have been stocked in Indiana during the three years.

That is good news BG we have had some good news from the DNR in the MI area on a few different subjects so far this year. The lake MI stocking is one and also a couple of rivers in the SE part of MI that were "marginal" at best for browns got a healthy stocking of "extra" fish that they had in the hatcherys.
With the rains that we had early in the year the rivers that they stocked with those fish were pretty much unfishable for most of the season which made it bad news for catching them this year...but good news is they will be in the river and getting fat for next year!

Yes the rain has been good think all of the GLs water levels are up this year. Salmon are a starting to run now in some rivers in Michigan.
