TON of salmon in the river at this time, and the numbers are steadily increasing. Still not a heck of a lot of summer runs above Rock Creek (the start of the fly only water) and the one's there are spread from heck to breakfast.
You can fish for three or four days without a take, or one fishing buddy hooked 4 in less than an hour. (Lucky Stiff!) The north Umpqua is one of the most delightful waters you can ever immagine for fly fishing (or any other kind for that matter).
Fishing is VERY 'techinical' in the fly only water and will test your skill level ... not to mention trying to wade around on polished lave rock!!!! BUY STREAMCLEATS and ware them!! Studded boots are usless as 'teets on a Boar.'
Also use a wading staff .. not so much as it was originally designed .. but as an indicator of how deep the water is. I've never, ever!! seen water as clear and deceptive as the Umpqua's. Running joke is to walk into the river first thing in the morning and flop down and get your first dunking for the day out of the way. No Sh..
Camping/fishing spots? Lots of wonderful places to camp right on the river. The two best (IMHO) are the 'Susan Creek Campground' at about mile post 29-30. The other is Whistler's Bend (turn off the main road at MP 13); VERY different water at/around both places.
Not too good with a fly rod (all-be-it's open water for any gear) the WB has close to 1,000 yards of walking access on the river. A good thing.
