got a few days to a week in Aug. where to go?
      #123455 - 07/18/04 03:01 PM

myself and my drift boat have to be on the N.F. Lewis in the first week in Aug. so i thought it would be a good time to check out some new Oregon rivers.

looking for a river that has a shuttle and a few fish.

any ideas?

i have fished the tillamook area a bit but would like to try somthing new.

thanks for any info you can throw my way, and if your ever up on the skykomish river i'll show you a few good hole that fish would lay in if our run was any good.

Pete, if I have any days off from my construction job, I might be able to catch up to ya. I think I will be buried, plus with Tuna on the weekends but I will get back to ya if I can find a day off!

I would stay on the Lewis If I was you. Not a whole lot going on then. Most coastal rivers are about dried up. And the Valley streams are pretty slow.......

the lewis just has so many sleds that it can make a good day fishing a bit sour for me.

was hoping i could find a nice drift boat river that had a few fish in it. don't need meny.

it would also be nice just to see anouther river.

thanks for the info.

Two Oregon rivers that are up to their ears in fish right now are the Rogue and the Umpqua. The Ump., is not a great river for a first time float with out a guide along.

The Rogue, a totally different matter. With only a few exceptions on the upper river (rattlesnake comes to mind) you can float the majority of it in an intertube (and lots do).

Each put in/take out has a well marked sign board telling you the class of rapids (not many) that you'll encounter. Bit of a drive for you, but fish out the gozonga, and the counts are increasing every day.

Need more info, drop me a PM, or e mail me at faevans@mind.net

Dah Fred! Two other rivers just came to mind, and closer. One is the Sandy (call Mark Backman (or Bob Larsell-staff) at at his shop in Welches, Oregon (flyfishusa is his web site) or the lower Deschutes. He can give you any info you may need.

great info! thanks.

i've been wondering about the Ump. do you know what class rating they give it?

i'm an X white water rafter/kayaker that has done major class 5 river from Co. to NZ, but i still get a bit nervous in my drift boat with water i would have not given a thought about in my white water boats. damn some times i feel like i'm getting old.

do you think with my back ground it would be best to get a guide first (lots of braided chanels) or would you think i could read the water and run it? (little rapids and rock gardens in the main flow)

wouldn't mind cheaking the rogue out agian. ran the upper part years ago on a 5 day trip. even back then i wasn't going to throw myself in rainy falls, that's one nasty looking hole at the bottom of that falls.

it would be nice to get down that way agian. used to get down there alot when i was the Wa. rep for a raft company called SOTAR that was based out of grants pass. (think there in Merlin now )

well thanks agian for the info.

Bad news Pete ... you are. :>) Vis a vis the North Umpqua, LOTS of heavy duty white water in the fly only section (Rock Creek up)but, if memory serves you can't fish from a boat. Should add to that, I don't ever recall seeing a drift boat above rock creek.

Below Rock creek (well, done a couple of miles it's pretty mellow. In that 1st couple of miles there are some corkin rapids. As this is in the 'any gear' water you may be able to fish out of your boat.

You can pull the Oregon fishing regs up on line and check same out.

IH if it's fishing out of a boat you want the Rogue is a WONDERFUL river that's completly atunded (sp?) to what your looking for. Couple of hours farther drive byond the Ump., but lots of shuttle services (I'll do it if you need help), etc. and etc.

Forgot to add: your avitar is the best of the best~~

Spring kings up the gazanga now (about 34,000) in the upper river and the summer steelhead (3,000+) are starting to show ing very good numbers (top 30 miles of the river .. 152 RM from mouth to dam).. anyway, if you want additional info 'PM' me.
