I'm leaving Friday to camp on Vancouver Is. for two weeks. I will be taking a trip with a guide out of Ucluelet (hope to bring the fly rod), but I was wondering what other oppertunities there are on the Island this time of year. Any helpful tips, places to go, ideas on what to do?

Stamp River - check the regs to see if it's open. Have fun.
Try some surf if you are in Tofino. Don't blame me if you get beat up by the water though.

We spent 10 days driving all over the island last year. Camped, mostly. Went all the way to Port Hardy. We found VERY little beach access anywhere. We casted Buzz Bombs off the Pt. Hardy dock, and that was about as close to a fish as we could get. We found them to be concentrating off the mouths of the rivers that they are going to ascend. But the island is rugged and undeveloped and little ability to get into the 'hot spots'. Go see Luna at Gold River. That was cool. I was the only one there and the researcher talked to me for about an hour. And Luna was his excessively friendly self. But don't touch! Rubbing Beach is totally off limits, even from shore. That's where the orcas come in and rub their sides on the stones. We took a float plane trip out of Tofino. Very cool. I've never been in one before. If they name those planes, it ought to be 'Louder'n'ell'. I never realized how many islands there are up there, and every cove has commercial shellfishing lines, spiderwebbed out and suspended. They grow oysters on the hanging lines. And each 'farm' has a tiny houseboat where the tenders live and often ride out the winters. A very intriquing lifestyle that would be interesting to know more about. Everything would have to come by boat or plane. Most of the little harbors on the map are little more than log yards or supply houses for work boats. And most of the salt water in them does NOT harbor fish. Want more info? We drove 1200 miles on a 300 mile island. We didn't miss much. Email me, if you want.

The stamp/somass will have summer runs, sockeye and maybe a few early chinook jacks. You may want to try some creek mouths for cutthroat. There may be a few silvers/coho's starting to show at creek mouths. There are map books available at most retailers and when you are driving through port alberni, stop at "Gone fishin'". This store is at the bottom of the hill just before you turn right to head past the marina. These guys are in touch and should be able to point you in the right direction for the gear you bring. Good place to purchase licenses. One of the better places to try for steelhead is the area of the stamp known as "Money's" This is above the falls on the stamp. Good place to fly fish and there is a bait ban if you are fishing gear.

Oh, and don't forget, use CDN cash wherever you can. You may find all kinds of 'cash-only' deals. CDNs hate their taxes, eh. Also, in some (a lot of) places, you'll find a curiously friendlier response if you do not have US plates (don't park out front) and do not flash US money, and talk about being from the US. I've tested this theory at shops that do not know me, even in my old hometown.
DO NOT try to fake a CDN accent (whatever that is). Throwing 'eh' at the end of every other sentence, does not work.
There used to be (lonnnnnng time ago) a really cool floating lodge based out of Ucluelet that would hit the southern coast and summer in some great areas. It was an old BC Ferry, coverted to a lodge/mothership for a small fleet of 17' sporters. I think now it only does the 'inside passage' areas.
If you get up that far (only 300 miles) check out Cape Scott on the Northern tip. Very cool. Very exposed.

I was looking at this and yes its old. I was wondering why Diana would give the island such a bad report. We are NOT undeveloped we dont all discriminate americans and we DO have amazing fishing! You just need to know when where and how. If this is such a bad place why would all americans come and fish it all summer?

I've never really explored Vancouver Islands fishing so my .02 a few cents short.
Maybe you could show me some rivers this summer and I could make an educated post? BTW welcome to the site!

Hey Kelly, welcome. It's all a ploy to stop "other" people from fishing "our" waters...

Early to rise,
Fish all day,
Make up lies !!!
Hope to see you all on the water.
