Mud flaps
      #128232 - 08/10/04 12:47 PM

So how did yall hang ye mud stoppers? I bought a couple of rubber flaps with stainless weights on ebay but need to hand them.

One idea I found on the web was
Quote:

Yes i went to a steel fab shop and had them bend some 1/8 alum
diamond plate and bolted inside fender well and attached rubber mud flap with chrome attached to bottom. I had it bent back 4' and then down 3'' to get flap back where you are not so apt to back over and tear off. I have less than $50 in both sides.

I saw something similar on an excursion, but don't know where they got them. Any ideas?

Is it because you are throwing rocks up on the boat?

Hey, Marty....I bet that guy on 8th and Peabody (?), called "Blue Steel", who does custom steel cutouts could trick those out nicely.

I was thinking dremel or one of auntys scroll saw designs would be a good way to do some. They would be sweet!! Once I figure how to get them up I will investigate some serious customization touches. The nwcustom mudflap will do any design too. I am just to dam cheap or is that poor to do it yet.

Scroll saw designs wouldn't show up very well unless it had a shiney or colored background applied afterward. Rubber would be easier to work than wood though.

If I need to bring my collection of patterns to Seiku, just holler.

I was thinking of the sticker design in stainless on the flaps. Like the naked ladies you see on them only fish instead.

So do you want just a cut out to apply to the mud flaps or a sheet of stainless as a mud flap with a design cut in? I can probably cut thin gauge as a cut out, but stuff thick enough for flaps would have to be laser cut.

I have rubber flaps and can apply thin stainless using rivets. I don't have the hangers for the flaps yet. Those should show up with the new boat

I'll stop at the model railroad store and see if they have stainless sheets Wednesday. You just want the SH.net fish without the text, right?

Zaq, I've never tried metal scrollsawing so this will be an experiment. Don't know till I try.

So far, the only wood items I've done are fish and game. Here's a sample. Scrollsaw stuff

No luck at the model railroad store. I "whined" to Caveman so he stopped at Navy City Metals on the way home today. He found 2 small sheets of 24 gauge stainless. Says Marty owes him $3.00.

Now to figure out how to do this.

(PS, Caveman says if I let him buy a plasma cutter, he'd be happy to do this for Marty! )

He does need one of those .. its his turn for toys isn't it? They make a metal blade?

They make a metal blade. Stainless is pretty hard to cut but if I go slow and use plenty of lubricant, it should work.

Next question,

I can add tabs (ears) to the cutouts to make it easier to attach. Yes or no?

An alternative would be to insert the tabs in slits made in flaps and fold them over.

That'd be cleanest imho, and you wouldn't have to keep up on repainting the tabs as they chip. AuntyM - if Caveman can't get a plasma cutter, does he have a buzzbox around to tack some studs on it for ya?

A buzzbox? He has a mig welder. Is that a buzz box?

I have to order some metal cutting blades Marty. Lucky for me, I know you are the pateint sort since you've waited 4 1/2 years for Southfork to finish your boat.

(just kidding Mike!)

I consider the little flux core wire feed things buzzboxes, so yeah, a nice mig setup would qualify if not exceed the definition...in which case, why no plasma cutter yet?
