Added the stage 2 air box with the 7 filter.. noticable power increase with the added air flow. I also did a ccv modification while had the hoses out. CCV mod keeps the oil from spraying into the turbine and runs it to back of truck or a collection can on frame rail. So far so good and will report back with more info on the filter with some miles under my belt using it. Looking for more mpg with this addon

AFE -$390 includes the box and best filter on market. My air box and battery box were bothbroken so this was the best fit for me. Tests came back with this one being superior to the others in flow and the filter was best too. Some have experienced turbo overspin from the addition of this one. Haven't had it long enough to give solid review but so far it is sueweet easy bolt on. This also gave the lowest egt, that is because so much air is available for the motor to breath. Noise level seems normal but more time to be put behind the wheel.
the ccv mod stuff costs 45 kit or can be done for 25 if you go to parts store knowing what you want.

They don't give these dodads away... but ebay can produce bargains.
Mike I hear you on the exhaust, also want some guages, bypass filters to make the rig complete. These things only make a great rig nicer to own.

Keep us posted as this goes into longer-term assessment. I used a K&N drop-in for a while and went back to OEM paper - nastied things up so badly I started losing power. It's comparing apples to crabapples I suppose, but it seriously ruined my opinion of high-flow filters. Objectively I know it's probably just that they're not so suitable for dusty environments. Are you running one of the pre-filter "socks" over the cone as well?

No sock at this time, but would like to get one... forgot to order that part of it. I have a kn on my toyota that treated me good, so it was hard to jump to a different filter. There was a sae study done on the filtering and the afe was one of the top two.

What does having to install a pre filter over the air filter tell you about the filtering ability of a K&N filter?

The prefilters just help keep the CHUNKS out of the filtering process. Its the small particle removal of the filter that is really important. Since all the filters will remove the CHUNKS. Same thing goes with a oil filter, a secondary bypass filter addon will reduce engine wear and oil life.
To get power you need flow (air, water and fuel). The more you can deliver cleanly/evenly the better off you are. Its that simple in theory but harder to apply in real life.

About the only thing a K&N filter will stop is chunks. Their filtering ability is suspect IMO. They were developed for Baja type racing, where an engine will be torn down after one race,so all they needed to stop was the big stuff.
Check out Bobistheoilguy.com, There are numerous UOA's (used oil analysis) that show high levels of dirt in the oil from cars that run K&N type filters. IMO I think a good quality paper filter is a better choice for keeping your engine clean.

I went with the 7 series on my afe just because of that reason. I am going to run a bypass filter on the oil system that will help keep it clean best I can.

Criminey, Marty. I'm beginning to put this Turbo Diesel aftermarket modification issue into perspective. You buy your truck dirt cheap on EBay, and then pour massive quantities of money into it to "tweak" it. I bought my truck at a dealership and pour massive amounts of money into monthly payments. I CAN'T AFFORD TO TWEAK IT!!!! Waaaaaaaaaaa!

out of warranty I can do as I please too . I am going broke quickly with this thing.. to much tweaking. The AFE Actually gives TOO MUCH Air and cause the turbo to have stall issues. Open wallet buy new exhaust, and a ported tubo housing to let the EXTRA Air escape.
But when its done it will be one fine running machine I hope.. I like it now so the improvements are fun to do and see the results.
May have to turn the power back down til I get the dodads installed.

Stickflinger, I made an appointment with Diesel Injection Services & Performance. The shop is located behind Flying J on Federal Way. It's a small shop and he's always packed. He's going to flash mine to get the codes left behind by the blinking service engine soon light. I'll let you know how it goes and how much a service is. Now with the warranty up I can choose where to take it.
The search for a new fleet truck continues. I've talked with GMC twice and drove the Duramax/Alison combo. Like most salesman he wanted to sell me a truck off the lot. I want a 6 speed and after he 1000 miles in the computer search he gave up. It'll have to come from the factory. Even from the factory your stuck with a two tank combo only adding up to 40 gallons. 5 months wait for this. I talked with Ford yesterday. Now these people want to sell trucks. We didn't even bother going out to look at the lot trucks. The factory order form came out. I speced out the following...
F450
Powerstroke
6 speed (with speed gears)
108" cab to axle length (16ft bed)
standard 40 gallon tank plus an aux 19 between the frames
limited slip rearend
40/20/40 cloth seats
speed control
A/C
Am/FM casette
They can have it sitting in the yard in 60 days.... I'll find out on Monday how much they want for this jewel.

I'm not sure if Dodge makes a truck with an 108" cab to axle length. I'll let ya know
Marty you need a aeroturbin muffler. You can use your 3" pipe mid way and run 4" after the muffler. This gives you some engine exhaust back pressure which can be used to keep everything in check.
The sound they generate makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

Actually got to much back pressure right now mike. Some guys are running the aeroturbin+muffler. I will have my guages in tomorrow so will have a better idea of the egt.
Systems on these trucks were designed to minimums... change one thing and its a reaction across the board.
