I'm thinking I will try to work up a good sabot load for deer this year. I shoot .54 cal and all I have ever used for hunting is the 430 gr. Maxi-balls. I have never been let down with the performance of the big conicals.
I have a Deerstalker in stainless with a 1/32 twist so it should send a 250 to 275gr. sabot out to maybe 130 yards with a decent trajectory. I think I'll order some of the black sabots, they are supposed to be well made and hold up well. Any suggestions or dislikes with sabots for hunting? The lead pistol bullets should perform fine at ML velocities. Thanks,  Bill

The only issue I have with sabots is that they are not well suited for quick reloading in speed loaders. I prefer the Hornady Great Plains bullet in 390 and 425 grain weights, and I also shoot a .54.
They are good for a first shot, as long as they pattern well with your other bullets. I usually keep my shots 75 yards and closer when using the ML, though. Just my personal limit.

I was under the impression sabots weren't legal in WA, am I wrong? 425gr Hornady GPs for me to, .54cal

As long as you use lead bullets in the sabot, not copper jacketed ones, you are fine. The bullet hits the animal, not the sabot, unless you are REALLY close.
