Fraser Sockeye new
      #124399 - 07/22/04 09:46 PM

According to a friend of mine that is good friends with one of the head guys at DFO said they hope to have the season run until Sept. 6th! This will happen as long as the predicted numbers come in. A six week season would be incredible. I own a 17ft flat bottom Lowe with a 50hp Yamaha jet, if you see me stop and say high! I fish almost exclusively at Peg Leg, see you out there!

Dad had his 2nd cataract surgery on Tuesday (only had to wait 3 yrs...) and was out by Grassy on Thursday. Went 2 for 5, and handing off one. The one he kept? 30 lbs and bright. I doubt he'll do the Sock opener today, as the snag-fest can get a little crazy, but he'll probably be out there every day next week. I'll be joining him the same wknd you guys are up there. Fly the flag and I'll spot ya. (This may be my only fishing for some time)

Might want to think higher up river.

I just got off the phone with Dad and he boated two Springs, and his buddy got a little one; 46 lbs.

Very slow so far for sockeye, but the Native and commerical guys just had a netting session, and it takes a few days to clear.

Was fishing a little bar below Grassy Yesterday. It was slow. Saw a few fish hooked, but none for me.
Apparently, Grassy was the place to be.
FYI, the commercial guys are out this morning. Here's a quote from another site: "Driving by the river at about 8:30 this morning I saw probably 50+ boats on the river between the Labatt brewery and Annacis Isl. Tomorrow evening was supposed to be my first sockeye outing of the season. CRAP!"
Double crap is more like it!!!!!

I normally sling 2oz of lead. Some guys I know that have been getting more hook-ups slinging 3oz.
Man, my arm aches just thinking about it

I'll be talking to Dad later today. Lots of illegal netting going on right now, and the commercial guys had their opener, so who knows.

I'll be up there on Sat/Sun anyway.

Here's a story from the Abbotsford News

By JOE MILLICANAbbotsford News
A storm is brewing on the Fraser River over claims of illegal drift-net fishing by First Nations bands, stretching from Mission Bridge up to Hope.
A range of groups and individuals say the issue is getting out of hand, claiming there is no monitoring of illegal practices and a lack of action by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to crackdown on culprits.
However, June Quipp, the former chief of the Cheam Band which is at the centre of the complaints, says aboriginal fishers are acting within their rights.
Quipp has also hit back at allegations that the band is threatening the future of certain fish stocks by catching large numbers in their drift-nets.
"Our concern is always for conservation, and our fishing does not make a difference as to whether a stock is wiped-out," Quipp said yesterday.
"We are the rightful owners of the fish. No treaties have ever been signed and we have never been paid for anything.
"We actually still own it (the land where the river lies) and anyone else using it, as far as I am concerned, is in contempt of the courts. That includes the DFO."
Quipp says band members fish "according to the court's decision," which she says puts "conservation first and First Nations second."
And rather than being given preferential treatment, she says the DFO is "discriminatory" as all First Nations fishers are forced to count out their catch in front of fisheries officials at the end of any given day.
"We are used as scapegoats by the DFO - they just want someone to blame," Quipp said.
"For a long time the DFO has been making the wrong decisions under pressure from sports fishers and commercial fisheries."
Sportfishing Defence Alliance of B.C. president Bill Otway says government ministers have "totally ignored" illegal drift-net fishing in the Fraser for five years.
However, whereas in the past he says the practice was only taking place upstream from the Agassiz Bridge, it has now spread downstream to Mission.
"This is a national disgrace," Otway said Thursday.
Otway fears there is "no hope at all" of the situation improving unless Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) minister Geoff Regan makes a stand.
He is also concerned the problem could escalate, with previous law abiding First Nations bands taking advantage of a lack of enforcement. Otway, however, was quick to point out his concerns are not race-related.
"We don't care if they are black, white, yellow, green or whatever.
"The same law should apply to all Canadians," Otway said.
Otway has sent three letters to Regan, but says he has only received one response.
That response, in June, saw Regan confirm that drift fishing is being carried out by First Nations bands - predominantly Cheam, but also Sto:Lo.
Wayne Harling, co-chairman of the B.C. Wildlife Federation's saltwater committee, said his organization fears for the future of at-risk salmon stocks.
"It's safe to say the Wildlife Federation is simply appalled that the Ministry of Fisheries will not take action," Harling said.
When asked whether those responsible for the drift-net fishing had a role to play themselves, Harling gave a frank response.
"We are dealing with a small group who just do not give a damn. They have the morals of an alley cat - they have no ethics at all."
Harling fears for the future of a number of different fish stocks.
And while stopping short of suggesting these stocks may be wiped out altogether, he says they are being put in a "precarious position."
Rod Clapton, president of the B.C. Federation of Drift Fishers, says the Fraser River fishing playing field is uneven.
"The bottom line is there is a huge double standard here (between First Nations and non-native fishers)," Clapton said.
"But is seems that no matter how often this issue is brought forward, this nonsense still goes on."
Clapton said the "only hope" for a resolution would have been a change in federal government.
However, he now accepts there is no quick solution.
"This is such a hot potato both federally and provincially that nobody wants to touch it," Clapton said.
Local fisherman Bob Kwak says he regular goes out on the water and sees First Nations bands drift fishing, but says there is "no monitoring" from the river banks.
"There are guys you hear saying 'we may as well get drift nets and do it ourselves.' There is no-one checking at all," Kwak said.
"It is not just that they are breaking the law, but it is because they are purposefully doing it in front of everybody."
"We just feel frustrated - we can't do anything."
Deborah Phelan, communications director for DFO's Pacific Region, says DFO staff regularly monitor the river and take action if they deem it necessary.
"There is enforcement action if it is determined there is illegal fishing going on," Phelan said.
"Charges can be laid if it comes down to that, and that goes for all the fisheries."
Phelan suspects that some of the First Nations groups perceived as fishing illegally may not actually be breaking the law, pointing out that some First Nations bands do have permission to fish in the Fraser River on certain days.
"It may be they have an opening (to legally fish) and these openings fluctuate," she said.
Regan attempted to pour water on the fire on Wednesday, making a short-term announcement for the 2004 salmon fishing season on the lower Fraser River.
According to Regan, the arrangements aim to meet the aspirations of the First Nations without displacing commercial fishermen.
Under the plan, Regan says a number of First Nations bands can fish for Fraser River sockeye, providing it is for either food, social or ceremonial purposes.
Half of this allocation will then be transferred to a First Nations commercial fishery, Regan said.
To assist river conservation, First Nations fishers will have their catches monitored by DFO staff, and will have mandatory landing stations, the minister added.
The Cheam Band is located on the north shore of the Cheam Lake, approximately 20 miles east of Chilliwack on Highway 1.
Current band chief, Sydney Douglas, was not available for comment yesterday.

cut n paste from 'Abbynews.com' One of the worst news sites I've seen, but it's from my old hometown, so I keep in touch. The local paper, which produces that site, is actually pretty good and typically about the size of say the Everett Herald.
Doing news searches on CDN news sites is tough as the top sties are gov't controlled/subsidized (CBC) and ALL the others are based out East. It's not considered politically correct to point out any issues with BC 'First Nations' illegal activities. Sadly, not much press is devoted to good things about 'First Nations' either (Thriving, non-subsidized industries, 'dry' communities, community involvement, self-policing etc. ).

Sorry I didn't post this earlier. I talked to Dad last night; It was a bit slow earlier this week, but he's got into several sox and springs this week. Up high, near Agassiz. Get on the water EARLY though, as there are a LOT of boats.

Wed and Thursday his boat limited out (I didn't ask how long they went out, but he usually is home by lunch.)

Interim trip report

Sat limits by noon; Tomorrow we'll see

2 Socks each by 9, and a pair of Springs 24 and 32. (only one hen, so not much roe)
Spaghetti Bar up past Agassiz Bridge. Lot of boats hitting limits.
(pics when I get home - I am at my sisters now and forgot my cam at Dad's)

and it finally happened; I handed off a fish to my Dad. <Sniff> I may never look at life the same way again.

Nice weekend w Dad.

Sat - limits by noon on both sockeye and spring including the nice 32 below which was a hen too
We had all but our last spring by 1030 - took til noon to get the last one. Lots of sockeye. I think we released at least 5 or 6 each.

Sun - nice n sunny. Same spot. Limits on sockeye. crackered one spring off almost at the net, LDR's another. Released a 20-ish lbr foul-hooked one. (The guy in the boat next to us almost freaked that we would release one. "Sorry, we don't like poachers where I'm from" he left a few minutes later)
No springs in the boat. Not many boats had any in. Lots of sockeye limits. Lots of guys retaining well over their limits too. (typical)

Here's my lil 32

This next one belongs in it's own category for the Aug pic contest. I call it "Fraser fishing is hard without a boat"

There's a story behind this potential Darwin Award nominee.

I'ts so stupid it's funny, but sadly, good people get hurt trying to rescue Bubbas like this clown. (no one got hurt this time, and yes, he lost the fish too)

Good picture-

We hooked about 16-20 sox between 5 of us--not super hot fishing compared to last year. That was 4 days of fishing--we took limits home, I hooked a spring and LOST it--oh well. THEN we did battle with some sturgeon--WOW! them fish can kick your arse.

20 in 4 days for 5 rods? That's average 5 fish per day. That's not a limit. On Saturday we released that many each.

Where did you go? 22? Grassy? We were up at Spaghetti

Last year we could of caught fish till our arms fell off. This year we got fish but worked for them-Sat was the best day of the 4.

We fished-Pegleg, Jesperson, below grassy, and below Vedder.

Then we let some Sturg rip our arms off.

I headed up to the Fraser River in B.C. last weekend with FJ, his brother Mike, dad Gene and Randy aka Craven Morehead. We put FJ's boat in at Island 22 and headed down to Grassy Bar, a few miles below the launch, to camp for the weekend. My first impression of the river was "wow, that's a big one" it looks to be about 1/2 the size of the Columbia and very fast moving. We set up camp in the dark and got ready to fish on Friday morning.

We woke up to this view...

Fishing started out strong, with FJ and Craven getting into them quickly. Fiesty Sockeye were the target with the occasional Spring (King) being the bonus. For gear we were all using 10.5-11ft med heavy casting rods spooled up with heavy braid and tossing 2-3 oz cannon balls with as long as leader as you could. A single corkie and a barbless 2/0 hook. Doesn't sound sporting? So what... it was a blast! When a good push of fish was coming through you'd hook a dime bright sock on about every 5 cast. These fish would put up a good fight considering the gear and current. They varied in size from 4 to 12 lbs. I personally lost 2 that were really close to 12. And everynow and then you'd floss into one of these...

Those big Springs would just abuse you. Everyone hooked into some, but Mike and I were the only ones lucky enough to get one in. We landed mine out of FJ's sled, that was an interesting ordeal, as I had on a leader that was close to 20ft. ::)

Dinner...

A few of our Canadian friends...

Gene having a great time on a fish crazy Saturday night

Nice scenery

It was combat fishing with the locals, but most of them were really cool and it was always fun just to sit back and watch the cracker show...

I will be making the trip up there again next August as it was a great time... and hey I found out that it is possible to cast a 24ft. leader and not hook yourself

Rumor has it, some sports fishermen are planning a fish-in protest on Saturday around noon at Pegleg.
They are protesting the commercial and native netting.
Remember the days with few fish being caught??? Gee, I wonder why!!!!

Don't get me started

As far as I know, Springs is still open. And if you "just happen" to catch a Sockeye, remember, you have to release it.
