Not sure if this is possible when I have to focus on the fly line for strikes continuously. 
Suppose I can only do it while not fly fishing along the river and walking through the woods etc..
Thoughts ?

Get some bird call recordings for your area. Learning to identify their calls will allow you to fish and only stop casting when you've heard a bird you want to spot.
I don't always have my glasses on or binocs nearby when I'm outside, so I am trying to learn to identify birds by their calls in addition to spotting them.

Aunty is right.. they are everywhere and its cool to know what your hear or see. More ya learn the more you appreciate your surroundings. Its not all about the catching

My hearing ain't so good from my USAF flight line days, those jet engines were loud and I had to work on them while running many times as an avionics tech.
I am going to give it go though.
