All-be-it the numbers are a bit dated we now have over 31,000 spring kings in the top 30 miles of river (fish counter ... well, actually they vid. tape them, then someone does a visual count) and 2,400 summer runs cruzing around.
Major summer run fishing is from August to November, and by that time we've already go winter fish in the stream. Summers actually keep coming until mid December!! But to keep 'things simple' any fish through the counter as of 12-1 is classed as a winter fish.
Major summer run holdings now at/below Grants Pass (30 miles up I-5 from Medford). Better yet the Corp of Eng. has finally started to reduce the water flows out of Warm Springs Dam (hatchery is at the base of the dam) which will make hooking either type of fish a heck of a lot easier.
Haven't heard any 'jucie tid-bits' on the fall kings entering the lower river yet .... and they're the guys you want to go after. The Spring'ers don't readily take a fly .. the fall kings are all over them. Same patterns you'd use for steelhead .. which makes fishing darned interesting on choice of leader break-strenth. A good thing!!

Kind of interesting right now. Somewhere in the area of 4,000 summer runs already in the upper 30 miles of river .. but it's like they've all crawled under a rock somewhere.
Even the guides are srugging their shoulders as to where the fish are hiding. At the 32,000+ mark now for spring kings and these are still hitting reasonably well for both bank and boat fishermen/women.
Their numbers/run should taper off quickly now, but not many fall kings in the lower river to my knowledge. Water running at 1720 out of warm springs damn and water flows DROP 200 cfs in 30 miles.
Lots of evaporation (we're in the mid/high 90's) and/or irrigation pull? Don't remember ever seeing this type of drop before.

Whats the water temp ? At these times we look to feeder stream mouths and up into them.

800 4722434 will give you the number out of the "warm springs dam." Not sure if the down stream flow posts give the water temp. Will check it out and report back tomorrow. fae

Well, all good things must come to an end ... even if it's by fishing Regs. Spring King season closes on the Rogue this Saturday night with a run (7-20'ish) of over 34,000 into the top 30 miles of the river.
But not all good things. The boaters are out in full force on the lower end of the river now chaseing the fall kings (A few over 50 pounds have already been caught; far more lost.)
4,000 some summer runs now above Medford and the number is climbing. In the last half of August the Corp. of Eng. will give the Rogue one more heavy shot of water to pull the FK's up stream towards the cooler water. A bit of a misnomer there as our average daily temps have been in the high 90's-low 100's.
God I love air conditioning!!
End game is that it looks like the fall fishing for either the Kings or SS will again be a near record year.

I've never seen a 50 lb king in person. Record in GLs in 47 lbs I think, its not over 50 thats for sure. Seen lots of 30 lbs and caught a few myself.
A 30lb king is a load on a fly rod can't imagine a 50lb actually I do not beleive they are a fly rod fish at this size, at least thats what my arms and shoulders tell me for 30 lbs.
Sorry about the hot temps out there its been a cool wet summer in the lower Gls lots of rain and we have had only 1-2 days in the 90s to date, probably going to be a new record.
Right now mid 60s, cloudy, and a nice cool steady RAIN !! To bring more fish into the river, like some big fresh chrome kings that are slowly starting in. Usually does not happen until late august but this year is different. Looks like it will be heating up shortly though.

My biggest is 51lbs. Did get one in the mid 40's on a bug rod once. I used to toss flies at the Fall chinook in smaller strea on the N. Coast. Ive actualy caught quite a few on a fly. I sold all my gear and sometimes I wish I hadnt.

Last years 'fly rod winner' was 71.5'ish pounds. Fellow was fishing out of a pram for summer runs and this honker ties on. Towed him around for quite awhile to put it mildly. (Oh by the way, think 6-8 pound leader!!)
Only way fellow beached the fish is a friend got below the fish in his pram and when it rolled on the surface he was able to get a net on the 'big fella.'
Made for some great photo's in our local paper.

AHA!!! Talking behind my back again???
LOL!!
Joan and I 'split' for the North Umpqua for a full week of "camping" in the 'land tuna.' Interesting thing is I retired on May 28th of this year and we've got almost 5 full weeks on the road since then. Tooo Coool!
As of August 11th the summer run count above Medford was 5,077 summer runs and 37,000+ spring kings. Darned few, if any? fall kings appear to have made it up into the upper river at this point. Major 'problem' is they're still running water out of the dam (RM 152-30 miles above Medford) at 1800 cfs.
This has the fish spread out from hell to breakfast so it's the boaters who are having the best shot at hooking up with fish. Once the water flows drop below 1500 cfs the fish tend to 'school up' in the runs and the bankie's have a much better shot at finding the bloody things.
All that said, the best fishing is still in September/October when the day time temps get out of the 90's ++ and the water cools down. Like the Umpqua over the past several days ... wet wading at 6AM. Waders were a complete waiste of time .. and by 9am (even with breathables) you were sweating like a pig.
Fished from dawn to about 9-10 am, split and did 'husband/wife things' till 7pm then hit the river til dark. The only major pain in the ass was getting a wasp sting the morning I left ... and then getting poison oak 'juice' off one of the dogs the next day.
Left arm looked like hell with the blood poisoning, blisters, yada-yada. 2 trips to the local 'clinic,' then the RN said 'this is WAY beyond me' and sent me to Roseburg's ER. Interesting to have an MD look at you and say "[**whoops**]!!" That's the worst he'd ever seen ... blood tests and all as he though something far 'worse' may be going on. Bandages, drugs, etc., from my finger tips to beyond my left elbow ... pain to cast with but didn't slow me down too much. (Which reminds me; for got to pull the anti-bi's out of the motor home.) Arm was close to 3 times it's normal size with nice brigh red veins running all the way up to the arm pit.
My first time effected with PO, hope like hell it's the LAST!!!

Sorry to hear about the PO we don't have that out here to my knowledge, Poisin Ivy but even that is not like it was back east. Sounds like you had a bad reaction be careful and keep the doggies leasched out their in the woods. Hope you recover soon.
Guess I am lucky I have not had anything like that since a kid.
Is it still hot out there ? Must be coming our way suppose to be 80s here all week which will be our 2nd heat wave this year.

You sure its PO? there are other plants that can cause serous skin prblems, especially if you get a lot of sun on the affected area.
I may have over dosed on race gass exhaust fumes and speed this weekend.... Is there any cure for that?

Back to "Sigh time."
Beat the 'living sh.t' out of the Rogue for 6 hours this morning. Fishing conditions couldn't have been better with the cool temps/cloud cover of the past few days.
1,000 cast ... 0/0. Glad the 'fishing was great,' as the 'catching' was ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! :>(
