odysseus114, tie him some flies that are made out of pink rabbit fur or pink/cerise marabou. Try a pink and cerise popsicle fly.

Also try some sparse flies. Often the fish turn away from the big flies (i.e. Showgirl). Try a size 6 hook, short pink krystal flash tail, pink floss body, pink hackle tyed wet fly style, and medium sized beach chain eyes.
There are also many flies for pink salmon at this site with recipies: Salmon Flies
Just look for flies that are the color pink. Also many of these flies can be tied with pink instead of the color shown.

i have had lots of sucess with the Tenny nymph in a size 6 for sockeye and humpys up in alaska in the pink, red, purple u can tie them very easy just go down to your local fly shop and buy some or tie them. they are kinda spares and i think it reminds the sockeye and humpys of small shrimp good luck!!!!

The only problem with anything size six is a alaskan humpy will straighten the hook like nothing. the smallest I use for humps is 2. I have never seen a humpy up here turn away from any fly let alone a showgirl. Check out my alaska posts and see the size of the humpys I am catching. 2 weeks ago we turned 40 loose in one hour. I wouldnt worr too much about scarying them.

Size 6 will work just fine as will 4 and 2. I was using a size 10 salmon/steelhead hook for pinks on the Cambell River just a few weeks ago. You just need to use heavy wire hooks. Size 6 has always worked for pinks around here, last year I caught a pink just shy of 10 pounds with a fly tied on a size 6 heavy wire hook. Best fighting pink I've ever caught!

Its not the size of the fish, its the river currents. thake that size 6 hook add a 10 pound pink and a 7kt river current and your pretty much scrwed. I have mangled a few hooks this year already. It sucks to have to throw away a fly because your hook bent. I recieved a certificate for that big one I released. ADFG estamated it around 12 pounds. That was the biggest hump I think I have ever caught. Check it out

So much information!! I ended up tying 2 shrimp (one with no back, and one with krystal flash), a pink and cherise rabbit hair fly, a flashy fly (basically a rainbow flash fly without the collar) a couple of sparkly buggers, and a karluk flash. Do you think those would work?

That should be fine. Where is he going to be fishing. alot of the northern rivers the humpys are quite ripe. Its been raining cats and dogs here for two days now and the rivers may rise and send all kinds of crap down them.

Ya, I checked out Willow Creek last night. We took a little drive down there and the water level has risen tremendously. Branches and leaves and all kinds of crap are flowing downstream. Be carefull everybody!
