High Water in places new
      #131940 - 08/27/04 10:54 AM

I took a drive down to Willow yesterday. Due to the storm, the water levels have risen a great deal. Alot of crap is washing down through the rivers and streams. In Willow Creek we saw decent sized branches floating down. Be careful when your fishing. Especially right after a heavy rain. Because the MAT-SU got pounded and those streams can be pretty nasty. Sure all of you know this but just thought I would bring it up. Dont want to lose any fellow fishermen!

Yep it will be a few days after the rain before the fishing is good off the mat. The fish really needed this rain though. Im guessing that moer silvers should be coming in now and not so spooked.

Definitely a good thing. Maybe the rainbows will start showing up a bit more too

What type of lures do you use when you fish for rainbows in the Kenai?

Do you ever use say screw it and use a bait caster?
I like to switch around. Use a fly rod sometimes and sometimes use a bait caster.

I am always afraid I am going to land something too big for my fly rod. Then I would be screwed and pissed. HAHAHA

Heres my dirty little secret, I fish bait on the kenai for rainbows, I drift fish like I do for steelhead back home and jack them when they first bite, never had a deep hooked fish yet. let your eggs get smashed into white skein left and thats when they work the best and will out fish flys most of the time. Also i get silvers pretty well that way too.

Thanks for the information WRO.
Are you going to be down in Kenai fishing over the Labor Day weekend? I am hoping the fish will be biting nice down around that time.

Most of the time I use my fly rod, but I do pull plugs for them out of my baot some times. Seems to kill them at the right time.

I seem to have been more successfull this year with the bait caster. My fly rod hasnt worked all that well for me this year. I guess its just my ability in using the fly rod. I am still learning the fly fishing.

I think alot of people dont realize it takes some serious skill to fly fish. At first I thought it would be easy, WRONG!!! Its not.

Im always learning. I have found if you put yourself around good flyfishermen they always want to teach you stuff.
