The new issue of American Angler has a nice article on Lake Ontario fall brown trout fishing. Its called "Football Season". They have to have the best brown trout fishing in the GLs. NY stocks almost 500K browns annually. Nice article on techniques, where, when, maps, etc. Plus we have our own on location expert here on steelheader.net in Bobk.
Be nice to him and he may give you some hints in a PM or email, never will it be an open internet forumn thats for sure.
Got to get up there myself. November and December is the hot time period per the article and other people I know that have been there.
A chance a 20+ pounder in the river on the fly rod.
Lake Michigan stocking of browns is down in Michigan and Indiana, and Illinois, Wisconsin appears to have the best brown trout fishing now. Not sure of Huron or Erie, but Ontario appears to be the best. Head east for browns in GL country.
Check it out.

Yeah I'm waiting for Bobk to invite me out to his secret spots. If you go take some pictures for us. Doubt if I can go for next two years anyway until my son gets done with HS football which runs into November each year.

The river that is famous for the browns is Oak Orchard, A.K.A. Joke Orchard. The Joke has been writen about heavily and promoted on every NY web site. Here's the real story! The Joke is 2 miles long from the damn to the lake, but only the top 1/4 mile is fishable without a boat. On any given day from Oct till Jan you will experience combat fishing at it's finest. There are only 4 spots that "hold" fish. The land on both sides of 2 spots are posted, and you must pay to fish. The third spot is frog-water and is fished from a SMALL sand bar/island. The fourth spot is at the dam(fishing off high walls). Flyfishing is generally done between these 4 spots. You basicly wait for the dam to release water to get the fish moving. Then chaos unfolds 'till the water comes down. An average brown is 8lbs, 12-17lbs are common, and you have an honest shot at a 20+. This is a VERY poor area. Lock your stuff out of site. Many cars are broken into and rods ect get stolen. If you are gonna go, get a room way in advance. Many times you will have to stay over 30 minutes away, or sleep in your car. If you're on a mission to get a big brown; yes this is THE place, HUGE fish in HUGE numbers, but don't expect any peice of mind getting it!

Ask Bobk about it, he just sent me some private emails on it today, the horror of it all. Not my type of fly fishing although a big brownie is still a target on the fly. I don't have to worry about room will just stay at Bobks. LOL Sounds like I need to bring my worse rods also, in case they get lifted. BG

I don't know BobK, but if he knows the area he won't be sending you to the Joke(to fish any way). It is a shame what's happened to many Great Lakes tribs since the internet, but there are literaly hundereds in NY alone that don't get raped as bad as others. I'm sure he'll point you to them privately. If not shoot me a PM.
Yes, don't bring pricey rods. My first time I had a T&T, Islander combo lifted!

Ouch, thats real nice equipment, Bobk is on this board and lives up in that area of NYS. He knows all about the horrors of it. When my son gets done with HS football will be in a better situation to get their in November. He has one more year of HS ball after this one.

What's my favorite spot and favorite stream to fish there??? When is the best time to go??
Hahahahahahaha!!
BobK
All of the tribs now have a "1 rainbow (or steelhead)" limit now. I have been pushing for a "1 trout" limit so the brownies don't get raped in the process.

I live about 10 min from port washington and they have switched to natural gas at the power plant. This means no more discharge and very poor fishing. I wouldn't waste my time in the area. There are other tribs within an hours drive from port washington with great brown fishing!

Yep no warm water no discharge = no cold water fish. Plus many are closed off to fishing now due to the terrorist threat.

Hey, BG -
The only plants closed to fishing are the Nuclear-powered plants... and they just have a "safety zone" around them!

There all nuclear out here on Lake Michigan to my knowledge and all are closed off since 9/11. My favorite two are among them also.

And BTW if we are so safe per the departing Mr. Tom Ridge of Home Land Security why are maps like this available to the public and our enemies I ask you ? Come on this stuff does not need to be available to every one !!
US Nuclear Plants
Look at how many are close to me, I am at risk.
RANT OVER !
