If I may make a suggestion. When I teach folks to spey cast I give them the general 'one-two-three' breakdown to show them the general casting rhythm is very similar to a one hander cast.
Major difference being most of it's going on in front of you not behind your back. With one exception, all spey casts end the same: forward PUNCH-power stroke stopping at 10 o'clock.
By flipping out some line (will vary by caster) and getting the 'student' used to the idea of the front "lift" and swinging the rod back and behind at shoulder height (forming a D loop) then just coming forward (all in one motion after the lift) with a punch stop at 10 o'clock. They soon get the idea of two of the most important (start/finish) of the majority of spey casts.
So the 'lift' is #1 in the 1-2-3, the forward 'punch/stop' is #3. So in a few minutes they've got down the beginning/end of the cast(s). Then it's on to adding #2 AFTER they get the lift/punch-stop into a bit of mussel (sp?)memory.
Adding #2 is where it gets interesting to teach/learn. Because your anchor/anchor point really comes into play. Greatest tendency now is to 'skip the lift' and try to drag the line out of the water (shall we call this a 1.5?) which will put the anchor too far down stream. And as your anchor/'pick' also determines WHERE you must aim your cast you'll watch a lot of "Bloody L's" till they get the hang of 'you can't do a 1.5.
If you watch all good casters, they're NEVER WATCHING what's happening with their line in the air. They're all watching where the anchor lands (good, bad or indif.)
Back to the "1.5" rather than a 1 and a 2, and why this doesn't work worth a darn was best illistrated to me by the example of removing a strip of tape off a table top. If you try to drag it off you get zip. If you take it by the end and lift straight up ... up she comes. The drag off is the '1.5,' the straight up lift is a '1.'
\
Anyway, was teaching a very good one hander the past weekend .. took him (yes he REALLY wanted to do a '1.5')about 30 minutes of 'practice' and he was tossing out close to 100 foot of line/leader/fly.
Wonder how much that 30 minutes will end up costing him?

My god that may be the most simple narrative explanation of a spey cast by Mr. Evans I may have ever read. I am going to print it out and compare it to what I do or don't do.
