Crab closure new
      #132751 - 08/31/04 09:49 PM

FYI.....I might have missed a post on the board but just to let everyone know, crab closes 7pm on 09/03/04. A few places are still going to be open such as south of Tacoma bridge, up by Bellingham, Samish bay, and I believe west of CQ but don ot quote me.

Gary Hulsey and his East Jefferson Chapter of the PSA are working on this issue. They plan to do their own survey to check WDFW figures, as a 3 month season in most of Puget Sound does not cut it.

They will need our help! Hopefully, we will be able to get a questionaire online and we'll be asking you all to participate and give us the crab catch data off of your catch record card.

Gary tells me our "Save Recreational Crab Fishing Online Petition" was a great success this last winter. He got over 2000 responses!

Stay tuned folks!

There were several proposals last year put to the sport advisory group that would have allowed the season to be extended. Fewer days per week to crab and reduced catch limits. Only one advisor supported any of this.....the rest said no way ever would they support it. Under that kind of advisement there is no way to increase the season in Hood Canal as there is no non-tribal commercial fishery allocation to grab for. As for doing their own survey....how is PSA going to do that? Is it going to be a scientifically acceptable survey? An online survey isn't thats for sure. No way to verify who is responding to the survey unless those who do also include personal information such as their WILD ID#. I'm really curious. BTW I personally would love to have a longer season.

Saw some people on the pier at Kingston crabbing today on my way over to Edmonds. Looked like they had 6 lines out between the 4 of them. Also saw a few boats going out with pots.

Gooose,

I don't yet have permission to comment further on PSA plans.

This probably won't help those of us that enjoy crabbing in Hood Canal, but the other areas it sure could.

I don't support a smaller daily limit, that's for sure. I would support an annual limit to stop the greedy. As to limiting it to specific days... I wouldn't support that.

Mixing Hood Canal with the rest of Puget Sound doesn't really work, regulation wise.

The advisors didn't like the annual limit either. I'm still curious as to how PSA might do a credible scientifically valid online survey? Guess I'll just have to wait and see what they come up with?

The advisors probably don't agree with the allocation either. Do you?

Well considering that the sporties get more than half of the nontribal share and that the bulk of the nontribal commercial is in the straits and islands.....I really don't have much of a problem with it. I'd be happy with a reduced daily limit and a seasonal limit that extended the season a month earlier and a month later.

The PSA records show the nontribal commercial share as 34% and sport share is 16% for the Puget Sound.

I am not in favor of bait bans for any species. I even believe in baiting bears.

I'm SO not sporting, huh?

I'll be checking on those allocation numbers. You sure those aren't the proportions for crabbing statewide? I seem to recall that they are.

While you're at it, come up with an excuse why the largest user group should get the smallest share.

I'm beginning to think WDFW is it's OWN special interest group.

Well my figures show that if the non-tribal commercial crabbers shares in Areas 9, 8-1, and 8-2 were given to us recreational fishers our seasons would last til about November 1st....and that's being a bit optimistic about catch rates and effort. Nothing will change in Areas 10, 11, 12 and 13 as the non-tribal shares are all recreational. Does anyone really want to set their sport pots outside Port Angeles harbor, Dungeness Bay, Sequim Bay or Discovery Bay....out in the weather and currents of the straits? That would be the only gain in Areas 4 thru 6. Western Area 7 where the bulk of the commercials catch is allocated is also not very conducive to the sporties gear and boats. Eastern Area 7 is still open....but again there would only be a month or two's gain. So unless there are other changes made it simply comes down to the reality that NO there is no way for us to crab all year long and we would be lucky to have a 5 month season in Areas 6, 7, 8-1, 8-2 and 9. Best we can hope for is that the Catch Card estimates for next season will be affected by the new crab endorsement which will be fully in affect on next years licenses. Just hope the affect shows catch to be less not more.

Hmmmmmm I suspect the customers of Albertsons, Safeway, QFC, Pike Place Market, Costco, Joe's Fish Market is the larger user group if you define users as the ones who do the eating?

With the tribal share being 50% and most of that being commercial sales, there is no worry for the grocery stores. Especially when they end up dumping crab for $1.99 a pound and then tossing it due to a saturated market. Not to mention the off shore commercial season providing for the stores. Nice try though.

As our in house analist, I see you did all that figuring, instead of posting the numbers. Are you hiding something?

I'm sure you have no objections to sport crabbers wanting to conduct their own survey, even if it doesn't meet your criteria for scientific. We wouldn't want anyone thinking you have a conflict of interest or anything.

Aunty I can't wait to see the results of that survey. Gotta be way more scientific than using my toes and fingers as a calculator?
