Log in all of your dry fly steelhead rises, hookings, and landings in this thread.
Its suppose to be prime dry fly steelheading in September and October lets see how many people here actually encounter one.
I will certainly not be one of the either.

What 'works best' for the Rogue and North Umpqua (just before dark is the best time) are actually 'skatters' that provide a strong wakeing action on the surface.

Are you reporting an actual rise to a waked fly by a steelhead ?

Sure count any time this season - 2004. Just want to see how much truth there is to this dry fly steelhead thing.
There are not many good opportunities for it in the GLs rivers.

Well, skip the 'mad face' part, but just noticed the headers have everyone's "IP address." Cool! Never seen this before; who would have 'thunk' that I'm good old ********** on the internet.
For you "IT" folks, how do these numbers get assigned?

They can trace every thing you do to your IP address, thats the government and everybody else I am talking about.
Yes I have tried it a few times. Never seen another person out here trying them either.
We will be looking for your reports Mr. Evans, rises hookups etc..

not everybody sees those ip addresses .. silly moderator. They are assigned by the domains you acess the net from (cable, dsl, aol, etc..) . Always on connections, the numbers don't change. So to protect your computer from hackers its a good idea to have internet protection.

Well, did get one in August on a Stonefly Dry imitation - and it wasn't being skated! Not sure if this counts - but have raised some just below the surface with the SS fly. In my personal opinion - if you can find some fish in say 2 to 4 feet of clear, slow to moderate current, it's possible to get them to take a dry - I think the conditions have to be just right!

Well - technically, just got one in August on a real dry fly. So far in September, have not seen the right conditions in SW Washington yet for the dry fly - every time I've headed out the rivers have been out of whack so to speak this year.

Yeah that counts nice the first confirmation other than the fellow out here in Indiana who says he got one on an orange bomber in shallow water also when we had a warm up this spring during the end of the winter run. I tried but the water was too high and stained when I did so I knew it was fruitless.

Good deal, oh forgot - sometimes shallow riffle type water can be awesome when you can bounce a fly on the surface. (duh - thats how I got my largest fish to date).

I use a simple spun deerhair with black sparse wings and tail on size 6 and 8. My wife likes size 6 and 8 crystal caddis. More important is right water, v-wake, willing player. Has worked on both the Klickitat and the Deschutes, but never on the Grande Ronde. I need lessons from Bald Bob I guess.

As long as it is waking, the fly really doesn't matter. Presentation is more important and is more a matter of experience since there is no way to describe the speed that a steelhead wants. In general, speed up the fly in slow water and slow down the fly in fast. Other than that, all you have to learn to do is drop your rod tip when you have a rise and count to 2 before tightening. That usually takes a while to get down.

So it looks like you need a shallow riffle or rapid and they will not come up from a deep pool. Is that your general experiences ?
What water temp range have you found to be the most optimmum for them to perhaps become interested in a surface presentation ?

Dry Fly Steelhead
Sure they can be taken on a dry but whats the probability compared to a sunk fly ?
Waiting for the PNW dry fly experts to post their 2004 results.

Fri. pm= ZERO, Sat am = ZERO, Sat pm = ZERO, Sun, am ZERO, and the same for wet fly, and sinking tip wets. All my posts are from the Klickitat. Cold water glacial fed. Craig

Zero on the surface, Fri. pm to Sun. noon. One on a sinking tip. Slow year. I was told the water temp. was 44. Craig

I would kill for a 44 water temp right now, still in the 60s. Those metal heads love the colder temps I am convinced of it after 24 years, etc...

Well the log isn't do so well. Here I thought all these years the PNW steelheaders were slaying them on flys in the autumn, while us GLs fellows were out of the game.
Guess I may have been wrong and all those magazine storys about dry fly steelheading also may be!
I guess if I spent 100s of hours trying dry fly eventually something may happen.
Heck the Old Man has not even put up a report and he extolls himself as a dry fly guy, if he can't do it who can ?

Well the 2004 Dry Fly Steelhead log is DRY as I see it, so much for those magazine articles about dry fly steelhead fishing success.
If you fellows cannot do it when you live out there whats the chance of a fellow coming out to dry fish steelies for a week probability of success ? Very low I suspect.

BG, From my experience, the window of opportunity for surface fishing (skating and drys) is pretty limited...basically the early morning and late evening. The rest of the day I concentrate on swinging weighted flies. I think when you are in the right place at the right time, you better have dries or skaters in your flybox, or you'll kick yourself. That being said, I was in Guam for most of the prime steelie-surface action season this year...and the steelhead fishing in Guam sucks. Next year it's SPEY TIME for Mojo! I'm sure I'll post pics if I ever get one on the long rod.
There's this one spot on the Deschutes that I can only cast to about once out of six casts with my single-hander, it's just a flick of the wrists with a spey, and it holds fish .
By the way a nice fly that most guys have in their boxes that can work well as a skater is the venerable stimulator. Just grease the crap out of it, keep the line tight, and keep your rod tip up. Wen you see the bow wave coming, lower the tip, and present the fly to the fish, say "to your health" (about 2 seconds) and set hard!
