still for many fly fishers.
Recently I posted about spey fly fishing on two other major US trout fly fishing boards and its clear that many fly fishers don't understand its usage and advantages.
Particularly a light 5/6 weight spey rod on large rivers for trout and smallmouth bass.
Definitely a market here to reach along with the rest of the sincle hand salmon and steelhead fly fisherman. Plus salt water crowd which is beginning to pick up on it it appears.
Trout fellows though are not attuned to it yet.
Rod and line manufacturers need to figure out how to reach the trout fly fishers.

Today I meet with Juro from CND and tried some of the new rods there bring out for trout spey LOOK OUT here they come.
And tried out a couple Proto Meiser too, 8/9 14 footer is a winner.

Well, in a way I can see why it's not used alot Hal. I know alot of the rivers I used to trout fish with the fly, were extremely small. I would stalk the trout, and barely flip my presentation out. For myself, would've been WAY overkill for that long of rod. But know a few who fish some big water, where these rods would be quite effective. Do believe Mattzoid has the Sage 5wt spey.

Jerry is right, you know... It sure would be overkill on MOST rivers I've fished. Add to that a lot of dry fly preference, where a short, upstream presentation and a drag-free presentation is deadly, especially at 20 to 30 FEET!
I don't think you will see a lot of 'em on trout streams, except for some very large trout rivers.

I agree with Bob on this. There are quite a few places where I fish that a 9' rod is too big. So I use a 7'6" one.A 12'er would just get stuck in the bushes where I fish.
It seems that everyone you talk to around here is that they try to covert you to one of them long rods. Bah,hum bug.

Have two 'short spey's,' and both are a grand thing to fish with in low waters. One's a 5/6, the other a 6/7 .. both (yes!!! the skunk is off!!!) took fish today.
A very good thing.
All that aside, in low water conditions a 'larger' spey rod is gross over kill, a short (11-12 foot) rod is the cat's meow for summer run fishing.

The speys in 5/6 weight 11-12 foot are perfect for trout rivers large in width. There is a big untapped market here.
Trout rivers in width such as these are what I am talking about:

Does any one recognize the spey caster in the blue shirt ? (Its not me)

Well, we 'discovered' just how BIG a fish a 6/7 11'6" 'trout spey' will handle today. Hooked/released two very nice summer runs (about 7# each) and then the fall Kings desided to get into the act.
Beached the first, broke off the second after about 15 minutes .. #3 ..... he broke off because the strain from the first two fish had actually WARPED the reel!!!
Don't ever remember a reel 'giving up the ghost' like that in 50'ish years of fishing.

Nice and those big kings will tear you up breaking rods, pulling loose line guides and your reel seats etc.. They too big for that 6/7 weight for sure.
And did you have to make a report like this after I had a bad day at work !!
Just may have to go full time on the bird watching boards or something away from these fly fishing forumns with retired fellows any way.

Hush!! BG.
:>)
And too many years in Sr. Mgmt to go there. Did have a few 'straight forward' conversations with Ex. VP's where they were 'informed' they had a higher underwriting authority than I, head of the Corp. or not. If you want to use 'it,' go for it. (All had an underwriting control number to access the computer system.)
To my knowledge, none ever did .. including the CEO. Perhaps that's why they paid me ... well, big bucks even for California.

Finally some more trout anglers of large rivers are catching on to this. Long way to go here though, a growth industry segment for sure. Need to put some equity into this don't you think Mr. Evans, our own "spey guru" one of the few as the article states. To think I met him by chance 3 years ago next month on the old spey MSN board !

"Believe me when I tell you spey casts look easy. Trust me when I tell you looks are deceiving."
I loved this one line; but an 8wt for trout is gross over-kill. Just my .02 cents.

Yes an 8 wt for trout is definetly over kill, the poor little fellows hardly put a bend in my 8 weight spey rod.

Yeah Fred our 3 year internet anniversary is coming up on the day after Thanksgiving. I remember since it was the last year our local HS team went to the state final playoff, we lost, but I remember I got home from down state and there was your message to me on the Spey MSN board or "that other board" you know the one I mean. LOL
