I've always been offended by the term 'Xmas,' only to find that it's not only proper, but centuries old. A 'cut/paste' of a section of a thread from a UK board.
"From X, the Greek letter chi, first letter of Greek Khrstos, Christ. See Christ.] Usage Note: Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents a Greek chi, the first letter of, “Christ.” In this use it is parallel to other forms like Xtian, “Christian.” But people unaware of the Greek origin of this X often mistakenly interpret Xmas as an informal shortening pronounced (ksms). Many therefore frown upon the term Xmas because it seems to them a commercial convenience that omits Christ from Christmas."
Darned interesting to find out you've been wrong from day one.

Oh that should really frost those who think they're wishing you a Merry (non Christ associated) holiday...
Think I'll tie up some special XMas and CHRISTMas flies for the Vedder for the annual tradition of fishing w/ Dad on Christmas and Boxing Day. I can't wait til it's a 3 generation thing.

Yup, I call it Xmas. Actually, thanks to my job, I'm one of the biggest Grinches out there. Fun when I'm delivering the packages to bright eyed kids. But the time away from the family kills me.

Fred, I agree with your "original take" on the subject. In this day of shortening everything into acronyms, I think Christmas, or "Christ's Mass" is just a little more appropriate and reverent.
Today, people just use the "short form" out of habit.
Just my 2 cents.

Jim, all things aside, I have to agree with you. This is why I seperate Christmas/Xmas from Christ's Mass. We're having a birthday party, to celibrate a person, not an exchange of gifts with 'whom-ever.'
Sounds a bit over the top .. but why do 'non-Christians' celibrate the birthday of someone they (otherwhise?) couldn't give a hoot in hell less about?
End of "holiday rant.''

With a Birthday like that ... you'd be 'worse than toast' if you ever "forgot."
