I have recently taken an interest in learning how to tan my own hides. Need a solution recipe (hair on) then info on how to break the hide afterwards. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. ![[bugling Elk]](graemlins/bugle.GIF)

did a deer hide back in 93 hair on. in the bath tub came out really nice still yousing parts for flies and jigs. was drinking alot back then dont remember how i did it, think i winged it out of a book and got lucky. ![[Cheers]](graemlins/cheers.gif)

sawman did some research through my library, way to much info for the bb or e-mail. suggest you hit the library. yes the library. the most informative book i have is the complete book of tanning skins and furs by james churchill/stackpole books. he covers the new and old methods as well as some shortcuts for the home tanner and is easily understood. find out what your doing before you get your hide. if you already have it e-mail me pronto. ![[Flag]](flag.gif)

Sawman, try this link web page . This is a site run by one of the taxidermy industry's leading companies, and has links to suppliers, tanneries, and a bulletin board that can answer your questions. From my experience, home tanning is HARD WORK...I send my stuff to a reputable tannery now.

sawman, I`ve done alot of hides and bear rugswith the following recipe 55 gal plastic barrel with screw on lid, add 20 gal water, 1 ounce sulfuric acid, 20 lbs salt.(wear rubber gloves) place fleshed hides in barrel , leave about two weeks depending on type of hide. stir every other day. after 2 weeks check to see if hide is white all over , if so take out and place in plastic bucket, add water to cover skin, add 1 box baking soda(this kills the acid) when the hide is done foaming, clean with soap and water. streach hide on plywood with 2 inch nails every 2 inches as much as you can, let dry until it is almost dry to the touch. remove nails and take a scraper to it until it drys. it will be sotf, sand with corse sand paper to smooth surface, rub neets foot oil over flesh side, your done I have skins that are 20 years old and still good. good luck if you have questions WCROhawk@aol.com

Thanks Hairhook! That sounds like the kind of recipe I'm looking for. I have 4 or 5 hides in the freezer I need to get to. I have a couple of questions though. Can I use battery acid, the type purchased in an auto parts store? What type of salt should I use?

Sawman, battery acid is deluded, see if you can locate someone who cleans swimming pools. They use sufric acid to balance the PH level in pools. They use undelude stuff. thats what you need . as for salt , get it from the feed store, 40lb. bags just plan old salt. not iodize table salt.
