The fishing in the portage area has been hot. I havent seen another person fishing in 3 trips. I landed 4 and my fiance landed 3 on sunday. We had many on, but just couldnt get them to stick. There are still fresh fish coming into the rivers. The best place to fish is the tributarys off the main rivers. The water is muddy and low eggs have worked well, but a chartruse fly sripped hard and fast seemed to do it as well.

Ok, fess up. Which creek is that? I've been wanting to get down on Explorer again. Last summer I blew out an ankle and couldn't, and my only trip this year there were only a few spawny looking sockeyes in.

Anyone been in there lately? I walked in to Skookum Ck a couple weeks ago and had a great day - got a good number of bright hens in amongst the colored-up bucks - 25 silvers and a few chums between the four of us fishing there.
A friend of mine and I were talking about a cast & blast in there this weekend if the casting might still be worthwhile.

I havent been in a while. I was duck hunting out there last weekend and didnt see anything bright, I just figured I should let them go on there way and make little silvers.

mmm...maybe pack the 6 wt along, then. There's gotta be dollies in there that no one gives a second look. It'll make a chromer that much better if one happens along.

One cold boat ride in the rain, Saturday. Broke the idle control off the motor on the ride down, but got a pretty solid fix with a crescent wrench and some 15 lb test . Escaped death (go left upriver around the first tree near Explorer, not right ), brought home a couple teals & didn't much look for fish. We decided it was best to preserve our lives to try the middle Kenai next week.
