Is he digging the same area all the time?
Set mouse traps just below the surface where he digs and cover with about 1/2 inch of dirt. KER SNAP! Unearthing a few mouse traps will usually cure a digger.
Not rat traps though! Just little mouse traps.
Works for stray cats that dig in flower beds too.

Put his turds in the hole. He won't dig there any more.

Exercise your dog more or give him bones/toys to occupy him. He won't dig if he's tired or interested in something else. My dog would eat the mouse traps! Wood doesn't stand much of a chance. Then, I'd have to take the dog to the vet to have the metal removed. I'm not sure I could justify that to the vet, or my dog.

Siberian huskys are known for digging, and now with the cool weather starting it seems like they like to create a hole to lay in. They did not do that all summer but just started again. Must be there way of preparing for winter and them they come in the house and jump on the couch sleeping on the pillows. LOL

They get alot of excerise the retriever is the one that digs, and his playmate is a lab, they play all the time. He tries to bury the chew toys or play toys.
I think they would have a hard time chewing the mouse traps if they were attached to their tongue.

I get a tin of black pepper and put a bunch in the all the holes. My yard used to look like an irrigation canal. My dog didnt just use to dig holes, he liked to dig trenches! Dogs always stick their noses in where they are diggin. After they get a whif of that pepper and sneeze a bit they usually stay away from the hole. And the bone idea is good only if your dog doesnt like to bury them, which mine does.

You can also try making a digging pit for the dog. Make a specific area for them to dig in. Hide some of their toys in the pit so they will dig in that area. Our digging problems are usually due to moles. The dogs are smelling the animals and digging after them.

My 1 yr old German Shepard/ Pit bull puppy loves to dig, in random places all over the yard. She is about 72lbs. SHe dug out of the yard 2 weeks ago when it snow. My neighbors said they tried to put her back into the yard, but she thouhgt they were playing. I fixed the hole by driving 3/8 rebar stakes into the fence to hold it down, it's working good so far. I need to try the pepper trick for the rest of the holes.

Het Elkman:
I'm glad you posted. I forgot I did basically the same thing. We have two dogs, a hound/lab mix (85lbs) and a collar/? mix(60). They have a pen I fenced in under a deck with a cement slab and an area about 8x4 of dirt. This makes two sides that are dirt to dig out under the 6' chain link fence. I pounded the rebarb in 4' lengths about 6" apart. First I doug out an area under the fence that is about 5 to 6" wide and 5" deep, framed it with wood. Then poured cement into the mold. It is just under the chain. I figured that should keep them in. They have dug in one area but it is not a problem. The places they dig make me believe it is moles and other animals they are going after. It was not that hard to build and you do not know it is there.

Pick up the dogs droppings ASAP. A friend in the Sanitations department told me this. The dog droppings contain food which if not picked up soon dissipates into the ground. This attracts field mice and other rodents, I have noticed the squirrels digging in my yard, it can't be for nuts. LOL
The dogs are digging for the mice and other rodents in many cases. So his theory was to pick up the dropping as fast as possible may help the situation.
I have two siberians huskys and it appears they only start to dig when winter is approaching.

Good old Huskies. The digging habits of the breed had us shy away from looking at them. Also, we may end up back in the SouthWest and would not want to have a Huskie live in that climate.

Get some of the booties that strap on the paws. Dogs will not dig if they can't use the nails. Works pretty well, and then you can use them for hunting chuckar down on the snake for foot protection in the rocks.

Ok. Get an E Collar(shock). They are a good tool that most people, without knowledge, frown upon or abuse. Catch your dog in the act, bust him. Even with the dumbest of dogs it wont take but a few snaps. The most important thing is correcting your dog while he is in the act.
The collar will serve you as an extended lead for training purposes also.

So why can't a dog dig, it's instinct regardless of where or how, so let em' dig...
Joker had the right idea, cement under the fenceline, I don't like chainlink, I prefer wood, I also use cedar chips in the yard, helps keeps the fleas away, if they aint diggin outside, they will inside, so make it comfy out there for em'

Sure fire method: We buy jalapeno peppers, cut them in quarters and either bury them in the dog holes or poke them down a mole hole with the end of a shovel or rake. It will end the digging in that area for sure. Works on both moles and dogs and whatever else wants to dig. The jalapenos work for a long time too. It takes awhile for them to decompose and work into the soil. A lot of mole repellants use jalapeno juice. But it is way cheaper to do it yourself. There is one downfall to this method however....it WILL drive the moles into your neighbor's yard! If you don't like your neighbor this could be another plus though.
