Barbless hooks new
      #136 - 02/15/00 02:26 AM

Would like to see this forum get going. So, do all you CNR advocates on the coast use barbless hooks, even though they are not required? Over here they are required, and while I was skeptical at first have found I like them for two reasons. First, they facilitate an easy release of native fish, and secondly, I feel I get a really good hook penetration, especially on those long line strikes when there is some belly in the line. I have lost very few fish as a result of barbless hooks. Any coments?

I have also lost very few fish using barbless hooks. But, I use them only where required to do so. I use Gamakatsu Hooks 95% of the time, and I don't think I have lost any because of a lack of hook penetration. First, the barb on the gamy is relatively small compared to other brands. Second, I have a strong hook set out of habit. On a few occasions I've even ripped the hook out of the fish's mouth, while fishing the short water. I suspect going to barbless hooks unnecessarily may compound this problem of mine.

I caught an 8 lb. hen on a barbless hook out of the green last Saturday, kind of suprised myself, it was a free sample the Gamatsu rep was giving away at the sportsman show in Puyallup. I would be willing to try them again.

alot of the old timers sware by the single siwash hooks, if you know how to rig them up on a plug the right way you will hook youre fish in the roof of the mouth every time. if you keep youre rod tip up you wont have that problem of losing any fish. great for catch and release.
