BG I was on the Root 2 years ago and the water was low then.
I did get two browns and a nook and my friend that lives there got 3 nooks. The harbor has been good to poor. You just need to hit it right.

My brother has reported slow fishing along the mouth of the Milwaukee River as it flows into Lake Micchigan. The other day, while fishing with large shiners, he managed to catch one smallmouth. Said his shinners were often frantic and he had hoped for smaller minnows in the event the shiners were too large for whatever it was that was passing through the area [crappie?].

He fishes this area frequently and has caught some nice sized trout from along the retainer wall.

Wisconsin has a large brown trout stocking program along with the salmon and steelhead. Prime time for them is coming up in November. Very warm and dry though out here this year, need lots of PNW rain quick. LOL Its not funny though.

That's for sure - I've seen some dandy's caught.

When I was in Milwaukee in August a local shore fisherman next to us caught a beautiful 20-lb brown. He didn't hesitate to use that opportunity to razz the passing guide boats - each time they motored by he'd display his prize catch and shout - "....and I didn't have to pay a $300 guide fee to get this..." OUCH!!!!

I'm still looking for a 20 lb brownie.

Lost a big one years ago I still have nightmares over.

Not too many Browns out here, a some lakes have them and a few rivers on the East side. I think the state record is something like 19.5 pounds. They have been planting some fingerlings in some of the lakes on the west side the last few years, I haven't heard anyone talking about catching any, but rumor has it the occasional 4-6 lber shows up. I don't know of anyone who specializes in fishing for them around here, but I'm sure there's a few who do, seems like every fish species has peoplw who specialize in fishing for them.

Big browns think night fishing in rivers and lakes, thats when they feed for sure. Lots of night fisherman for them out here.

In the big GLs they can get to 30 pounds in the rivers here 10-15 max, 10 is big though for any river.

The below-dam section of the Owhyhee River south of Ontario, Oregon, is managed as a trophy brown trout fishery - strictly C&R for that species. There are some hawgs to be had there.

The Boise River running through Boise, Idaho used to be referred to as a "blue ribbon trout fishery - don't know if that's the case still. At any rate, several years ago when river levels were atypically low in the winter, some folks were working the isolated pools pretty hard and reportedly one guy caught a large brown well over 20# in a hole near the Boise State University [BSU] campus right near the downtown area.

But for the most part, you're right - salmonid management out here is generally focused on others light rainbows, etc.

My biggest fishing the Milwaukee waterfront, from shore, was in the 16-17# range a couple winters ago. Will be out there this Xmas looking for a bigger one. Many years ago my Dad caught one trolling outside the hardbor that went 23-24#. I think that was the biggest fish he caught in his lifetime - he's since passed away, but his trophy still hangs on my brothers wall.

On the Lake we use to long line just before ice up and right after ice out. 200'+ back and 20'or less of water with plugs with good days and some that were just cold.
we were just out side of the sand bars in 10' of water the last time I fished that way and got 3 browns and one coho.

I was just in Milwaukee last week on business, I guess I should have brought some fishing stuff, well I really didn't have time.

So are those big Browns you catch in the GL's any good to eat?

I don't eat any fish from anywheres any more.
Stopped eating the Lake Michigan fish back in mid 80s. LOL
I let them all go. Well I gave a big salmon to a poor old guy last year on the river who said he needed it for food, etc.

Lots of people do eat them though, just not me.

Yeah I was just curious, salmon are good but I have never liked eating large trout, I thought that maybe those browns in the GL's might resemble salmon as far as table fare, but maybe not.
