Rice burners....
      #143504 - 10/30/04 01:15 PM

Price was right $500.00 with a blown motor. This 4Runner is in far better shape then my 88 pick-up was in. It's completely stock including the never installed spare. Everything works except the rear WW. Came with new rims, CD player, and a alarm.

Now all I need is a motor

Excuse the dust.... It's the best "4 banger" ever made IMO.
Stay tuned it gets better....

Straight looking 4Runner. Will the motor stay stock?

Andy, 22R are the carbed models. 22RE are the EFI models.

The 4Runners 22RE has the old manifold design (1985-1988) while the 93 has the newer style (1989-1995). I do believe they also went with a new injector style in the later RE design. The thing about these motors is they have been around for a while and have proven themselves many times over. With a stock 112hp and a whooping 142lbs of torque there pulling capabilities are limited. What makes them stand out is there reliability and fuel economy.

Cupo, When I first looked at the 4Runner I expected to see the typical thrashed truck that's seen to many miles pushing oversized tires and an electrical system that's been raped by some kid wanting it to BOOM going down the road. To my amazment this truck is bare bone stock and whoever owned took care of it. I did find out the removable face on the CD player is broken. Nothing a little glue won't fix. The body is straight and beside a small amount cancer on fender edges it's never been wrecked from what I can see. What gets me is the hole in the block. You really and I mean really have to try hard to explode one of these motors. I guess the previous owner found out that if you bounce the RPM's off the rev limiter on a motor with 208K on it she's going to come apart. As far as keeping it stock..... I've been hanging around Marty way to much for this to happen Right now the motor will remain stock. I'm going to focus on the suspension first. Starting with an Energy Suspension urethane bushing kit (Body, rear springs, sway-bar, upper/lower A arms). I'm replacing the A arms with a set from Pro Comp and I'm going to have the rear springs reworked. I hate squeaky suspensions. I haven't decided on shocks yet but it's getting some new ones. In my younger days maybe a 7" lift to look cool... In my older days how about just a better suspension.

Now for the motor. You've played with these things... any suggestions?

Funny as long as it wasn't me. I thought my '86 22RE was rated at 119hp from the factory. The only thing I did to mine was to replace the exhaust with headers from LC Engineering, 2.25" tubing, and a Flowmaster. The power gain was very noticable. Bumped me up a gear on hills and mountain passes.

It's not as big of a mess as it looks like. Everything has it's place. The impact only went as far as the water pump. Looks like even the 93's exhaust will fit. With the suspension mods, new tires/shocks, and battery I'm still be well under $2000 in the project. Best of all NO payments!

Nice Runner. Really clean.

I'd suggest new rears rather than getting the existing ones reworked (same as saying rearched?). I don't think you'll find a rearching job goes very far. How about some Alcans? They make 'em in whatever lift and load cap you need.

ak, Thanks for the input! I'm not looking for a lift but more like a stance. We have a very good spring shop here in Boise that will build you anything you want but your idea would reduce the down time. The biggest tire I'll run is maybe a 30. The new A arms are only to speed up the time it'll take to remove the old bushing from the old arms. The truck has 208K on the odometer and I'm sure every component needs looked at.

I'll do a search on Alcans....

I'm looking for a spot under the hood to put a second battery. I wonder if a snorkel on a 88 would move the air box outta the way?

Alcan

Everyone I know who runs them has been happy. I'm looking to get into a 5.5" myself before my axle wrap takes out another ujoint. They'll do pretty much anything though - from zero lift up or down.

I suppose you could relocate the airbox pretty easily. The snorkel I added pipes right into the stock intake, so the box, MAF and ductwork is still there. If you run Optimas (or another battery that doesn't need to be installed upright) you can build some sort of tray and mount them on the frame rail. I've seen that done a number of times; tells me there's something about that engine compartment that makes it hard to fit anything else in.

Alcan wants $370 + for a custom set of springs. I know the local shop is cheaper then that. I was thinking about getting set of 88-98 2x4 1/2 ton chevy rear springs. I'd have to move the front hanger but it's an cheap upgrade that's proven. I ended up with a set of Rancho traction bars to help out.

Yep, they're not cheap. Great product and customer service though. And see, my local shop is about the same price and doesn't know ANYthing about spring rates.

I have a nasty case of axle wrap at the moment and would rather use antiwrap springs than a trac bar, less clutter to hang up on things being most of the reason. That Chevy swap is supposed to ride nice, though. First I'm thinking I need to finish dealing with the drivetrain, as it's starting to resent my beating on it for the past few years.

No doubt these guys know there stuff. Seams the chevy springs will lift the runner 2-3". This is what I don't want. I'd rather keep it at stock height or maybe 1" higher. I'm going to get the motor switched and drive it around for a bit. I did find out that the 93's windshield will fit my 89. Another score here since the 93's glass is good and my 89 has a crack in it. Between work and the upcoming tilla the project is in a holding pattern for now.
