Yes, that's a hard one to come up with. Think I sold off my cheap combo for over $250 (old Cabela's 9wt 14' with SA 1213 and WC line). I'd watch ebay. You may find someone who may get you into one. Have you tried looking in Cabela's? I know the spey rods are made in Taiwan now (mine was made in the USA). Think the combo's they sell are cheaper now. Not quite $125, but still a pretty good deal.

Be careful I bought a couple of cheapies on eBay, and they weren't good rods to learn on. Their action didn't suit them to casting by other than experts.
Low end rods that do work for me are the new Cortland CL and the Redfields.
I got my new Cortland on Ebay for $80.00.
I will however sell my two mistakes cheap.

Do have a good line recomendation for a St Croix 14.9.10..?

I would sure like to know how many people have this particular rod, and what line successes they have had.

Your help is greatly apreciated. Ray

Rio Wind Cutter is what I use on the 13 foot 7/8, floater 8,9,10 a St Croix rep I know who uses the 14 footer for his Irish salmon trips also uses the wind cutter. Thats what Rio recommends on their web site to last time I looked.

St Croix 14 ft 8/9

Lines in the 525 – 585 grains would work fine on this Rod.

Homer is right on the money with his line recommendations. I have found the 8/9 Delta or 8/9/10 WindCutter to work very well on the 14' St Croix.

Thank you all... Will go and try this line out tonight on the American River. I'll keep ya posted.. This is a great resource, I hope some day I can give out a little advice of my own.

I'm making a transition into Spey due to my shoulder. I just purchased the finest rod I've ever casted, a 11'10 6/7 from Bob Meiser. I'm looking to graduate to a taller rod and this St Croix will train me until Bob makes my 13 footer due in Dec.

Once again, Best Regards and Tight Lines to you all. Ray

Hey guys,
I work in a sports shop in BC, Canada, and I've been itching for a while now to get into Spey Casting. I'm still a student and reletively poor so I'd really love to know what line combo Verne used with his Cortland, as we aren't really a specialty shop but we do have access to those Cortland CL 8/9.

On a different note, if I did actually pick my pockets and go for a more expensive one, what would be recommended?
I hear the FlyLogic Dec Hogan series are very nice rods...

I have settled on a 7/8/9 windcutter for my Cortland as best for me. It really isn't a bad little rod, fairly fast. The only problem I have had is it is hard to keep together with 5 sections. I recommend taping.

How much more expensive do you have in mind? The Dec Hogan rods are pretty nice but there are many other great rods out there at realitively inexpensive prices by spey rod standards. CND Expert Series, TFO, And the soon to be released Echo two handers from Tim Rajeff are 3 I know about. I also like that Cortland rod.

Well, I've got to give you a ton of credit for knowing to buy one of Bobbie's rods. Just back from the Deschutes where (4 of us) hammered away with his two proto type 16 footers. (And no, I won't say a thing about the rods .. other than the lighter of the two IS A SWEETHEART!!!!!)

Bummer of it is I've got to take the rods back to him this moring. (Read in here "Booooo and Hisssss.") Only problem is each rod is a six section blank ... one going back now has 'seven' sections .....

Fred, I heard Aaron is having Bob actually come up to his place to do a demo of his rods. Should get Aaron and Bob both in here to talk about it. Would be a good chance for a group of guys locally to test run some of Bob's rods.

Hey, Jerry -

Fred may have to wait a while to ask for a favor, after turning that 6-piece rod into a 7 piece!!!
