Andy, My ML deer starts same time, let me know if you want some company, we'll lay the lead to a couple. Back half of the week o' course!

It was dark and the guy didn't know how to use my camera and then all of a sudden it flashed and the pic was history. Took a couple more but my ear to ear grin was kinda cheesy.

Put a herd to bed the night before the opener in a road closer area. Snuck up on them to 100 yds opening day, 60 plus animals, no legle bulls. Bummed out, went to a drive in spot were we found fresh sign the day before, drove to the end of the road and there was elk, couldn't believe it, 10:00 am opening morning. The elk dipped into a hole so me and my son ran down the road, when we popped up, there they were 50 yds, single file moving slow. First bull had a fork but I couldn't put an eye gaurd on it, About that time my son,On his first elk hunt, Starts going off that he just saw a huge 5 point and he's about to step out of the hole. Words can't explain how excited he is. Any way out steps this bull, I tell him to get him and he shots, Not positive that he had hit him I shot it in the neck and dropped him. Turns out that it wasn't a 5 but it was a real nice 4 point with one perfect shot right behind the shoulder so I just shot the walking dead. Turns out to be the easiest pack I have ever had. We did the elk by ourselves and were back in camp in just over 2 hrs. Pretty good way to spend the day with your son. Will send some pics to Marty when I get them developed

I got my first elk on Bethel Ridge this year. Spent first light on opening day looking over the same canyon I had spent opening day last year. Met up with a hunting partner on one side of a ridge about 8 a.m. After 10 minutes, I topped the ridge and headed down the other side. Hit the bottom of the draw and back up the other side. Just about to the top of that side in a stand of trees, about to go down the other side of that ridge when I hear one shot followed by another a few seconds later and I thought it had to be my partner. I look back toward where I just came from, and about 30 seconds later I see elk running through the trees that I'm standing in. At that point, my head is going 100 mph as I know there is a hunter on a stump about 400 yards up from me and the elk are heading right for him on an open ridge. I know it is now or never. I look ahead of the elk for an opening in the trees that I'm standing in, I find one, and scope it hoping elk will appear. Sure enough, here they come across the ridge but in my scope: cow 1, 2, 3, calf 4, cow 5, 6, spike 7 BOOM. ELK DOWN one shot. I watch it fall in my scope thinking I hope I didn't shoot one of the cows. I run down my ridge and up the other side before I see spikes and I stop worrying about shooting a cow. I walk up on the spike and then see eyeguards thinking that's not a two point in this spike only area right? I then match the eyeguards to the ears and, whew, eyeguards below the ears make it a legal spike. At that point, the work began. Later, back at elk camp, and around a great fire, cigars and toasts were had by all. It turns out my partner missed twice, but I didn't. Should get the meat back from my butcher next week; so my winter steelhead pack should be stocked with jerky, pepperoni, and sausage. The same kind of thing happened two years ago when the other partner (my brother) in the picture missed twice and chased a 3 point blacktail into me which I didn't miss. That's ok if they want to keep chasing animals into me.

Great job on the kills men!!!!! You will all be eating good. I hate to admit that I didn't kill an elk this year. Anybody got any good recipes for elk tag stew? I only know how to fry it in butter and garlic.

got this one way up in north idaho near the border of canada. we packed half of it out and came back after dark to get the rest of it and the carcass had been dragged into the woods about 20 feet away--all 400+ pounds of it. whatever dragged it was huge. needless to say we took off and let whatever it was (prob. a huge black bear or grizz) have the meat.

heres a bummer story for ya. i and my crew finally drew tags in unit 49 in idaho after four years of no tags. packed in two days before the opener and found a heard with three bulls the evening before the opener. one bull a very nice six point. a perfect set up. just before dark, as we glassed these bulls and made plans for hunting them the next morning, BOOM! about twelve shots later we watched the wounded six point run into the timber. looked up the hill and saw a couple guys from a camp we had met earlier from WASHINGTON scuttle up the hill back inthe direction of thier camp. bastards poached the six point the night before the opener. didnt get these dirty out of state mother#@!*^% turned in for a couple days due to being quite a ways back in. never heard if they were busted or not. i doubt it.
