Alewives as a food source for salmonids aren't that good of a deal. They contain a material called thiaminase if I remember correctly that interferes with fertility and causes some real problems.
This was first pointed out in NYS Atlantic Salmon restoration efforts in Lake Ontario, and was found to affect lakers, too. I don't know what its effects are on steelhead and browns, as I haven't seen any reports.
By the way, the introduction of zebra and quagga mussels and the round goby has been having a disastrous impact on mysis shrimp and other forage species for the rainbow smelt, alewives and most other prey for the salmonids.
