I agree that the run should be closed. I also agree that the netting should also be closed..... PERMANTLY.

Truth be told, the fish have nothing to fear from me fishing he he

first, there are more than enough fish to have it open this year, maybe even more than the 1500 that are expected to show up.Last years return was only 1100 fish so this year is 25% larger than last. Second, the run will never recover until the habitat issues are solved. It's not the sport, commercial or native catch that is keeping the run size small. In the 1980's , the catch and kill percentage of the run was plus 80% every year. Now it's less than 20% by all user groups.
Now the downside to going this weekend end is the water level is quite high for this time of year and it started coming up last wednesday and from the last report I got, it was still rising on sunday. This may slow your fishing a little bit. Also the town of Spence's Bridge wants anglers to voluntarily stop fishing when they have caught 2 fish in a day. I don't really know how this is suppose to help the run but be aware that most of the local will not be happy with you if you catch a fair number of fish and boast about it. Hope you have a good trip, just don't beat up the old fish that are hanging around town too much.

Have several reports from folks just back from the Thompson. To paraphrase: 'the reports of it's death are greatly exagerated.'

Several folks, all fishing independently, all did VERY well, all on fly rods.

My wild steelheader conscience would not allow me to participate knowing the stress that system is under.

I will just read my Thompson River Journal until the wild runs return sufficiently.

Lots of other rivers to fish.
