I just got access to a boat. I was wondering if anyone has trolled Arrowrock and hooked into anything big (over 3lbs) Usually I catch the usual half to one pounders while bank fishing. I am new to boat fishing. I would appreciate some pointers.

i never been to arrowrock, but most of the bigger trout i've caught trolling (everywhere in general) were with a piece of nightcrawler about 1 1/2 long, with a small splitshot a couple feet up from the hook. rowing very slow.

Cripes I can't believe I didn't see this post sooner. Newbee if your still around out of the three lakes above Boise IMO Arrowrock will produce the biggest trout and some nice size Bass. I lost a monster at the confluence of the Middle and Southfork. I thought it was going to break my pole holder off the gunnel. I was using ultra lite tackle and it was all I could do to get the rod out of the holder. It spooled me and then a knot failed. I was flat lining with braided 8lb with a neutral Yo-zuri minnow. Running a electric off the bow at about thirty pulls. Running real slow. I've fish the pond hundreds if not thousands of hours and I'm here to tell you I'll never forget that afternoon. My partner and I saw it come out of the water and it was silver with a dark green back. Called F&G when I got home and they said probably a landlocked Chinook. They planted them in there in 91 & 92.
If you see this post shoot me a PM...

If the reservoir is not accessible (e.g. ice) i used to do quite well this time of year in the pool below the dam. I never used to tell people as this was a bit of a secret spot to me, but the last few years i've seen more people there, and the fishing has suffered (may have something to do with the construction as well). But i've had many days of 10+ fish. These fish have a very high strength/weight ratio (i think because they have to fight the current constantly) and they're usually chrome bright with mint green on the back. Theres a few coho also. Get as close as you can to the dam, then throw out as far as you can toward the spill. Some days are great, some are a total bust.
Also, you have to bank it, there is no boat access that high up.

I do not have any pics. I should clarify, when I say 10+ fish, I mean 10 or more fish caught, not 10lb+. Most fish are usually 10-16 in. Like I said, the last few years the fishing has not been as good. Some days you'll not even get a bite, others you may catch a few.

oh. I was there a couple of days ago and i was curious how close you can get without getting drenched by the water coming out of the dam. I could feel the mist from the road. What is the best time or season to even consider going down there. I think it would be fun and different more like practice for Hells Canyon type of fishing. How do you rig up?

Back in the early nineties I was down there when the water was so low it was just the glory hole and then the river funneling down through. We were casting big spoons as far as we could out into the deep for about 45 minutes then moved down about 20 yards when a couple other guys showed up. They hadn't been fishing for more than 10 minutes when some hollering got our attention and we ran over to watch this guy Larry fight and land (with the help of my friend Joe Weaver, who lunged out into the water and heaved it onto the bank)a MONSTER chinook. He took it down to Albertsons to weigh it (18LBS. 6OZ.)then straight to Zimowsky at the Idaho Statesman for photographs. I was there, saw the whole thing. Apparently he missed the all time salmonid record from the Peak by a few ounces. It was an 18 lb. plus bull trout caught years before, according to F&G. Right around the same period down there in the rocks we stumbled across the head of what we think was a brown, looked like it had either been turbined or cut by a prop, anyway judging from it's size, we guesstimated it was in the 15 lb. plus range when it was alive.

Oh yeah, I thought I might add that if you want to catch a s*$tload of trout on Arrowrock, go up the south fork channel canyon until you get to moving water, park the boat and walk upriver a tadger, and cast out hardware. Anything. Whenever we go there, I use everything in my tackle box that never caught anything before, for purchase justification purposes, if you get my drift. Good place to take kids or neophytes too because no matter how bad you cast or retrieve, or what you use, you will catch fish. I'd say we have had 100 fish days there between 3 of us, but we've never stayed longer than a few hours. I'm serious when I say we had a fish on every single cast. There were so many trout I think we could have caught them with doritos! And it's been the same EVERY TIME i go there! There wasn't one fish over 16", though. It's probably going to be a couple years before it gets back to those conditions, what with Arrowrock being 95% drained this last year.

Nice finding good specific information on Arrowrock. I'll be trolling there this spring and am interested in launch info, good areas, etc. I've fished the bank with limited success and look forward to access with a boat. I flatline with rapalas, finn minnows, etc.. Haven't cowbelled or downrigged for years but have the equipment. Just added rod holders to the boat after losing one overboard to a rainbow at C.J. Strike. (luckily recovered with the fish still on) Please continue to post more. I'll do the same for Arrowrock, Lucky Peak, Cascade, and other locals.

Hearing all this trout business is giving me the itch. Think I'll hit the lakes. There are several that I thoroughly enjoy fishing smack dab in the middle of some real ritzy neighborhoods. Let's just say I don't get smiles from everyone I see. Nothing I enjoy more than beating a hatchery trout to death in front of 'em and tucking it away for dinner....mmm mmmmm....trout..

Thanks for the kind welcome, BorntoFish. The cutthroat photo is Oct 05 at Henrys with my sidekick, 7 year old grandson. (his fish caught on a holographic rainbow panther martin) We totalled 6-7 hours fishing at Henrys State Park over four days. (Yellowstone day trips were our main activity) Caught 7 cutts/hybrids, 19" - 22", 3-5 lbs. Four while spinning and three flying with Holloween beaded pattern. Grilled two; released the others. Superb eating.

I would think that Browns might be in both Arrowrock and Lucky Peak regardless of stocking history assuming that they occurred in the river prior to the dams being built? I know they are not native but suspect they've been in the watershed for many years. Comment? I was up at Lucky Peak scouting around last week. Few brave souls fishing near Turner Gulch ramp. Didn't see a lot of activity other than attempt to stay thawed. Ramp looks slick with an ice layer. Lake is way low as is usual this period. I'll be launching at first opportunity this spring. This thread has me leaning forward toward Arrowrock. Good information. Any other stories (hopefully some truth required; exaggeration expected) regarding our local lakes and trolling is appreciated. I'm playing catch up here since buying my boat in October. I do spend considerable time sitting in it out in the garage checking out everything over and over just waiting for spring. Like a disease. The Kokanee threads are very interesting as well.

The first browns were stocked in the Boise River system in 1974. They were stocked below Barber Dam. Others were stocked in Whitlock/Vibert boxed as eggs and allowed to hatch and grow naturally shortly after that. Since then there have been regular annual stockings in the river from below Diversion Dam to Eagle. I'm still trying to tally the total number. I'll post it once I do...
Southfork and I went up and trolled last summer and caught some really nice Kokanee and a few nice trout. It was easy pickings. U-Boat came up with his daughter and grandson, and put on a clinic. Pop-gear, wedding ring, shoepeg corn, and downriggers at 20-30 feet. I believe it was around the middle of July.
I'm sure if you looked around a little you can find the thread and pics...

Yeah, that would be nice. I used to look forward to annual trips there [June and September] camping in the park and fishing the various "hotspots" from my boat or pontoon kickboat.
Haven't fished Henry Lake for about 3 years, maybe get back there this next year.

Good info on Boise River browns stocking, Mojo; thanks! BTF: My first trip in October to Henrys but not my last. Have a cartop boat for use with the kicker off my main boat. I'll tow the camp trailer and take a boat next year. The fish were very healthy in October; a local guy told me they can be somewhat "soft" during the hot summer months. We hooked one that had some considerable size to it. I handed the rod to my grandson just as it stripped and broke the line from the reel so fast that he almost lost the rig. I started loosening up on drags after that unanticipated episode. For the few hours we devoted and with no boat along, we were pleasantly surprised with the fish we caught. Couple of men and one woman with fly rods only were doing really well just before dark with olives and halloween's plus a blue and black feathered jig. Catching them sometimes within a foot of the shoreline on their retrieve.

Right, that's why I generally timed my trips in early June, or in the fall. Plus the heavy weed growth in mid-summer made for tough and limited fishing conditions.
Never tried bank fishing there.

A casualty from yesterday. Shoddy pic, as my girl is doesn't understand how important it is to own a working camera. She has a super nice Nikon that hasn't worked since last New Years in Mexico cuz of some sand. Just send the sucker in...anyhow...phone pic...but a smash job of an Issaquah fish none the less.

Came across this posting on the IDFG site. I think there is still a good chance of Brown Trout being in both Arrowrock and Lucky Peak although IDFG records apparently don't go back further than 30-40 years. They may have been in the watershed long before? IDFG: "Brown trout are native to Europe. They were introduced into Idaho waters in 1892. It was not until 1948 that introductions were successful. The brown trout is more tolerant of silt and warm water than native trout and, therefore, has been stocked in areas disturbed by man." Maybe we can pin this down with a further look at history. I know the Idaho Historical Society has a number of early fishing photos from all over Idaho. I'll check them out in their new location up at the old prison. Now what is probably a simple question: How do you tell a Rainbow from a Kokanee? Caught four 19" to 20" 'trout' while trolling at C.J. Strike in late October. Meat was almost orange. I've read about both; rainbow with spots; kokanee sans spots. Couple of these fish had no virtually spots and a decidedly forked tail. Long, slender and silver. Please educate me.
