When the Scottish salmon season is over
      #150391 - 11/30/04 12:38 PM

now I know what other sports the scots pursue.

Today is St Andrew's Day - the national day of Scotland and start of the official haggis hunting season. (Dogs have never been used to hunt the haggis, so recent legislation does not affect the hunt.) Today, Scots in their thousands will head for the hills in the hope of bagging a few of the beasties - not for eating, as they are particularly foul-tasting this early in the season, but just for the fun of it. To join in the cruelty-free hunt from the comfort of your home, head over to the all new

Scotland

Until you've "eaten" haggis ... (Robert Burns B-Day) you've never eaten in your life. No wonder these guys sport around in Kilts in mid winter!!

I think I just saw on on the Times Square New York web cam or was that a memory flash back to my batchelor party night 27.5 years ago ? LOL Oh what a night that was with 30 BG colleagues, things I cannot talk about nor vaguely remember,
that long night.

Haggis don't think I have ever had myself.

You will never forget it. <The horror> I think it was the incentive for getting mad at the English gits and tossing large heavy objects overhead in frustration

Did you know the Scots almost invented football when they came up with the haggis? When they decided to eat it instead of kick it downfield, the history of the sport was set back many yrs.

Not long after, they did invent the game of golf, when they came up with another ball, only smaller and entirely indigestible.

Scottish Salmon fishing article new [Re: fredaevans]

Scottish Salmon Rivers

Nice article on a recent trip, see link below, by a NW angler to scottish rivers, except he left out key information, like COST !! WG please fill in the critical blanks.

And whats this fishing over dark spawning atlantic salmon all about in the autumn ? The Horrors continue to our beloved wild salmon even beyond US shores.

Also what color and pattern flannel shirts should we wear over there and it looks like us Yanks will have to leave our good old US jeans at home. Very interesting. I will now have to figure out what Scottish clan my attire aligns with. LOL

BG

P.S. I am sure this will get discussion

FLANNEL?? Sacrilege. You need to wear Tweeds and good Woolen Tartan goods. And don't forget a GOOD SILK TIE, in "old school colours" preferably, and a "Deerstalker" for your head!

Bob K is correct Tweeds, +4s by choice, dark socks, tattersall shirt and a dark tie, a quilted waistcoat. Now you will get repect.
The Tweed has a late run of salmon but some of the early fish cannot wait and are in their mating colours, not usually a problem as it is easy to pop them back, if angling stopped as soon as the fish changed it would be a short season.
The Spey comments are a touch unkind as IF you know the right people /places to look it is possible to get good beats relatively cheaply.

Prices see here,

www.fishsalmon.co.uk

the Fishspey site is having a few problems but should launch soon.

Willie, just off the phone with the "Meiz," understand you have a new toy on it's way. (His Proto 2 of the 6 section 16 footer.) LOVED the Proto 1, Leroy Teeple one of northern Oregons better casters/fishermen was required to hand 'your rod' back at 'gun point.'

I've been waiting with baited breath. It will be interesting to see how it handles a full sunk line and intermediates. I will get Ian Gordon to give it a go so Meiz gets some reasonable feedback

My educated guess is you'll find this rod will "pluk" your full sinker out like it was a toy.

Gather "Proto 1/tip 1" still 'needs work.' Bobbie fitted it with a different tip ... same result (not me this time!) Busted! Sigh... he's put this one on the back burner; too many requests for 15' rods.

Pooie.

How cheapely a commoner like I you mean could fish there ?

It better be cheap if they expect me to fish over dark salmon. LOL

Don't know about the tweed and tie thing. Could I wear my Gls camo and what about my plastic fly bags ? Would they laugh at me ?

Hey I think I have found an IRISH spey casting instructor and mentor, a real Irish man too, not one of these american born ones etc..

Hello Willie Gunn, I see the hunt is going well while the salmon rivers are closed. Actually had a minute to read the headlines of the Scotsman, now back to US corporate world, today I get to be interrogated by four external lawyers, yes it takes four to handle me. Don't worry I will survive, I am clever!! BTW is this true about Robert the Bruce ? and I advise the Scotsman they have misspelled encyclopedia.

LOL

THE GLORIOUS SCOTTISH HAGGIS HUNT

It's that time of year again. The warm weather's gone, the drizzle has come and our Haggis Hunt game returns. It's a daft bit of fun that involves looking at our scenic webcams but it also has some great prizes. To find out more go to the HAGGIS HUNT.
To give you a flavour of the game here's a wee fact from our Haggis Encyclopaedia:
Some say the spider watched by Robert the Bruce was escaping from a haggis foraging for food.
