Duck Decoys
      #151388 - 12/03/04 06:56 PM

I have inherited some very old Mallalrd decoys, they are plastic and in decent shape. Probably dating back to the early 50s. Some are even the self inflating type where you put the ring in them and give them a toss. They have been used but before I plan on gettting back into duckhunting with them, I'd like to know if there is any collector value in the older decoys like this. I see on E bay the new ones go for a pretty good $$$ so if anybody knows much about old ones, send me aPM. I am not planning on selling, I just want to make sure I am not going to use something that would look betetr on my office wall. I know my Grandpa(who passed away 4 years ago now) would be fine with me using 'em but it's still kinda sentimental.

I first saw those self inflating ones about 30 years ago.....fathers hunting partner showed up with 4 dozen and was really showing them off that day.....us boys were really amused when a flock of buffleheads ripped thru the deke spread .....dad's hunting partner was not so amused ....the old man didn't say a word but sure had a big grin.

Greeting from hardyguy, I have a old wooden decoy that I acquired awhile back, thinking of selling, I believe its made by Mason. Would you be interested ?

Sorry for delay, here is a picture of the Decoy, I believe its in original paint. Open to offers or will trade for vintage salmon plugs or bass lures.

Appears to be a very good condition Mason Detroit grade Mallard. Nice collectible!

Is there any detail carving on the bill? Bit hard to tell from the pic. Would be nice to have some other pics....bottom of the deke, head closeup, tail paint, etc. I'll have to do some comparisons to my records.

http://www.rjgantiques.com/decoys/13465.htm

Take a look at the Mason Standard Grade Glasseye shown in the picture in that link. The site it is on shows a number of other original paint schemes for glasseyes, tackeyes and painted eyes. Yours appears to have been repainted. They have a good condition original paint one listed on the site for $850. I do see ones like yours which is still a very nice collectible going for $100 to $300 in the collectible decoy market.

I about died when I saw that a very rare Mason went for over $350,000 in an auction.

Just my opinion based on that one pic......I'll certainly like to see some more. One caveat on that opinion also is that there is quite a huge range of paint schemes found in the Masons and my references are no way complete. If it is original then you do have a very very nice collectible. Probably near the end of their production in 1924.
