Hey guys, I am coming down to OR for the Thanksgiving holiday. I will have the week after Thanksgiving to fish. I was looking for some advice on Fishing the Sandy or the Rogue for Steelhead as well as any winter Salmon that might be active.
Is it worth a drive from Eugene to fish either of these? Are either of these reasonable for bank fishing and if so in what general area? And do any guides have rates or dates available for these fisheries?
Thanks for your help in advance.

The Alsea just outside of Corvallis has a great run of steelhead from what Ive been told. I will be fishing for them this year for the first time myself. Im sure the Rogue and Sandy are both fantastic too but the Alsea is much closer and probably has less fishing pressure than the sandy does.

Check out the Elk or Sixes on the S. coast. Both those rivers peak for Chinook in late November.
That time of the year we usually get a lot of rain and most of the time the rivers will high and muddy. The 2 above mentioned river are an exception. The Elk clears faster than the Sixes though.
Winter Steelhead really dont show up i really good numbers until mid December in most Oregon rivers. The Umpqua is an exception. It gets a good shot of fish around Thanksgiving. Just look up some guides that fish Umpqua and give them a shout.

Thanks for the input guys. I will have to check out these other options. I will be fishing the John Day for Steelhead the first week. I may have to go chase the Mighty King after that. I would love a update on any of these of rivers as we get closer to the end of the month.

Willierower is right on with the Elk/Sixes info for the king run(s) at the end of November. However, access is a major problem on both rivers if you don't have a boat.
End of November you'll find the winter runs are already showing up in reasonable numbers at the very bottom end of the Rogue (Gold Beach) and the summer run fishing tailing off on the top 30 miles of river (Medford up to the hatchery).
Another good possibility would be the Chetco in Brookings, OR.

The clack has been fishing fairly well at Barton ramp and at Riverside park above the pillings on the North side of the river. Pulled two bright hens last Sunday the 7th of November. In another couple of weeks things could be in great shape on the Clack...Tight lines... and Big Rods w/ small tube flies....The Red Rocket....

Thanks for the report DD. Were you fishing from the bank or boat? I just had a customer tell me about the middle fork of the Willamette, he said it would be good for trout. Too much water and too little time.

I was fishing a 14'6" Scott ARC with the Red Rocket from the bank....Yeah I here you on too much water and too little time. I need to just become a guide and quite this office stuff, but I just don't see guiding as paying the bills if you know what I mean...

If you are around on the weekend after thankgiving look me up. I just recently moved to the Portland area from Corvallis and have yet to get many fishing buddies except the old lady. But I would love to do a drift down the Clack or some other surrounding river. By that time fishing should be up to par for steel....Plus you would not have to be bent over just to get into a boat to go down river....

Thanks for the invite. My weekend time will be a little limited. My brother is getting married Saturday in Eugene. But, I may be able to make a quick trip to Portland for a 3/4 day on Sunday. I have to fly out of Eugene at 7:40pm Sunday. But, I would be game to make the trip if it works into your schedule.

There is always the Santiams that would be closer to Eugene. They should be picking up about that time if they are not totally blown out from rain....

The Rogue, at least the top and bottom portions, are a big sleep right now. Gather a considerable number of fish still in the Agness area ... but for the most part this is a 'boat show' due to limited walk in access.

Well my damn camera is on the blink. But, that didn't stop me from catching 2 nice steelies on the John Day. We are going back up for the weekend, hopefully we'll have a camera that is operational and photo friendly fish again.

Not had the chance to fish the John Day (drive over it going to the Deschutes) but it's a grand looking bit of water.
Suspect I should cut my 'drive short' and spend some quality time there. Any web sites that give info on fish runs, etc.? Ask as I've got zero info on the river. Fred

I don't know of any real solid info on the JD on the web. I have fished the lower stretch of the river just above the falls when I have gone there. I guess that the first 6-8 miles from the Columbia is all slow moving water in which you can run a boat up. And then you have to hike in a few miles to get to the better fly fishing waters. There is some private property around there so you need to pay attention to the postings. But, I am lucky enough to get access through a family member on some of the private land. I haven't explored any of the rest of the river upstream though. I am sure that the fish are holding up there somewhere as I see other fisherman making the hike from the falls and they tend to blast upstream on a mission. There is also acess upstream about 15 miles from there but, I am unfamiliar with it. Other than that I am not much help. It is a beatiful river to fish. And I am sure when the water flow/conditions are right you could have some monster days there.
