Winter Steelhead Mecca ? new
      #155667 - 12/16/04 02:33 PM

Huh, and all these years I thought it was the OP and Skagit/Sauk and BC rivers. Plus its warmer in Southern OR.

Rogue River

It might be moving higher on my to do list, plus I have fishing colleagues there, I think ? LOL

It might be a good river for steelhead, but keep in mind that the community down there could always use some added income from said fisherman in search of the ellusive steelhead mecca lol. And as far as the OP is concerned, there is always a run of something going on here. (I live in forks btw) Oh and if anyone ever wants any info on the rivers here just pm me and ill get back to ya as soon as possible.

I caught first steelhead on the Rogue. I miss the Rogue. I haven't been back to southern Oregon for over 20 years now. Stories such as this one makes me long for the days of years ago floating the Rogue in search of chrome. Visiting waters written about by Zane Grey. Learning to swim in the cold river even in summer. Catching not only my first steelhead from the Rogue but also my first fish, my first salmon. Almost every weekend of my youth was spent fishing with my father on the Rogue River, my true home waters.

Sheesh!! 1 800 472 2434 will give you fish numbers in 'only' the top 30 miles of the Rogue. Numbers don't include any fish up the Applegate, Ill., et. al.

Well last year I got the Rogue River Journal for Christmas and have many of the other PNW river journals from Amato. I bought the book The Color of Winter by Doug Rose which is all about the OP river steelhead fishing will be reaing it over the holidays.

Yep, going to be out there some day thats for sure. Heck I can use bigger flys and heavier tippits out there for those big wild steelies.

Let me know how that Doug Rose book reads.

Yeah, those journals aren't too bad. But not always the best. Give you a taste at least.
