Before I book my beat I need to know what WC means in the Must Have option. WG any hints on the best and cheapest beats to us Yanks would also be appreciated. PM me if you want to keep on the QT as we say here.

Nice looking and well organized site, I did my 10 minute read of it. Hmm, No fishing before 9 AM and a mandatory 1 hour break for lunch, and ending at 5 PM don't know about that, not what I am used to. Couldn't I start at First Light and fish through lunch ? First Light is the prime time
Excerpt from the site, below: What is involved in a day's fishing?
When you arrive at the beat, the ghillie will meet you, usually at the main hut at around 9.00am, and help you set up your tackle and select a suitable fly. He will then show you where to start fishing and where to go for the rest of the morning. You will be expected to stop fishing for an hour at lunch time (usually about 1.00pm - please remember to bring your own lunch!). He will then organise your afternoon session, often on a different part of the beat. At the end of the day, usually about 5.00pm, you meet again to tell him about any fish you may have caught and to find out how any other rods have got on.

Fishing in Scotland is very organised. The gillie usually works 9-5 with an hour for lunch. On Monday morning, start of the week, no sunday fishing, he will explain the beat and the rotation, so everyone gets a fair chance to fish the best bits. After that as long as you are fishing your allocated pools you can usually stop and start when you like, as a conservation method most beats restrict the hours to 10 or12 in 24.
WC water closet, toilet, scottish ladies do not like squatting behind bushes.

Its good that its organized. So its possible to start at day break if the river rules allow it after the first day when the ghillie explains the beat to you. Are there any rivers there where the beat allows you to fish both left and right bank ? (You see I am picking up on this now.)
Aaah the Water Closet how civil. FYI, there are basically no rivers in the US that have on river toilets, except perhaps at a major access parking point and then it will be what we call a Porta-Potty which is an enclosed plastic toilet, and beleive me it can be an unsavory experience at times.
So we are used to squatting behind bushes and trees etc over here.

Delfur is a double bank beat where as others are single bank. The lower Spey, Brae, Orton Delphur, Rithes & Aikenway and most of Arndily are double bank. Then the middle spey tends to be single bank till you get up as far as Knockando then it is double bank most of the way up. Carron & Laggon although single bank have a cunning arragement so no onme fishes oppersite you.
On the middle Spey it is\seldom the anglers fishing oppersite cause problems but it is nice to have both banks.

Hal - you mean to say you squat to pee??
Only time I had to do that was after my hernia operation... the doctor's orders were not to lift anything heavy for two weeks!

WG,
So you can actually wade across some rivers and fish the opposite bank if your daily fishing rights allow it ?
Bobk, squatting is only for # 2. LOL

The beats that have double bank fishing have boats and the gillie rows you across. I would not recomend wading across the Spey in anything except drought conditions.

One very big advantage on a Scottish river is that there will be no boats floating through the area you are fishing like we have here right ? No drift boats, canoes, pontoons, etc..

Unfortuneatly there are some canoeists but they are usually well behaved and ask where you want them to come through. You can direct them down the far bank or behind you if you are wading. According to a court case brought in the 60s they are only allowed to go down the Spey so are not allowed to cut back to go through the rapids again. If you are playing a fish they will wait till you land the fish before coming down the river. There is no fishing from Canoes, driftboats etc.

Excellent no guide boats floating through with their sports interfering my salmon and fishing. Will take a deeper read of the spey site over the holiday and I am sure I will have more questions. Well heres another one, how is lunch served on the river by the Gillie or do we sojourn to the local pub for the hour ?

Really depends on the which beat you are on. On Tulchan you can order lunch and one of the house girls brings it down to the hut. (Read challet, no waders in the hut, as the floor is polished wood. Dish washer, central heating, I've lived in worse as a student) I remember one day when the wee lassie reversed the van over a couple of Sage rods that one of the guests had laid on the ground in the car park, I felt really sorry for her she was really upset.
On Orton the gillie brings soup and sandwhiches to the hut.
Wester Elchies where I fish on opening day one of the local hotels brings down a HUGE venison casserole, probably enough Bambi to feed 20 then usually aple pie and cream. The log fire in the hut burning away in the corner.

Malcolm, when I ever make it back there to fish again, I'm hooking up with you on opening day JUST for the food. I'm drooling already.
