clay slide on vedder river
      #160963 - 01/07/05 03:11 PM

mid morning today the clay slide at "Slesse park" on the Vedder river slide in and blocked halk of the stream flow. The river from there down stream will be unfishable for some time. Just a little heads up that if anybody is going they should check ahead on water conditions for the rest of the year. This is bad news for steelheaders out there.

Sorry, I didn't mean to criticize, it's just that I get paid to find problems with software... It's a great site, and has reams of info on fishin the Valley. Maybe too much. You're making it too easy to find the spots some of us old farts had to muddle our way around for yrs to find, and still haven't hit all the spots listed on those maps, because we have our favorite spots...

Did I say maps? Nope, I was mistaken. No maps there at all. Nothing to see. Move along. There's no fish in the Vedder...

W4f, most of those spots are the popular ones. But with the river changing with each high water, like NOW, maps are just a guide. I hate maps, unless I need one

What's funny is that some of those spots I've never known the name of, or called em by different names, yet fished em many times. If I'm not fishin with Dad, I prefer a solo 'walk the river til it's almost dark and then muddle my way back to the vehicle' approach.

Thats my MO also, as I recall the Vedder had a lot of easy walk in access ? Theres a few runs I fished 20 years ago I need to get back to also !

BG, one of the main problem's with the Vedder is it's easy access and the close proximity to the lower mainland. Well, thats and lots of fish

Well I see it has not changed much in 20 years then. Except probably more fisherman and boats, etc..

Is high boat traffic in that river the cause of the slide?

We have some boat motor restrictions on some of the rivers up here to prevent bank errosions. I was just wondering if that was the cause or if it was from something else.

VERY few boats on that river (especially on that section). Only the occasional pontoon and rarely a driftboat. Not too many places to put in (is that a cause or effect?)
The section is about 15-20 miles of water like the NF of the Sky (if you know that water) and parts of it are a kayaker's playground. Very short watershed with very steep slopes surrounding it, and fed by a large lake as well. It ain't a slow river for the upper half
The area of the slide has gone several times before, and there is another similar area just down-river from it. A lot of money has been thrown at trying to mitigate those two areas.
The 'upper river' is also called the Chilliwack River, coming out of Chilliwack lake, and the lower, below the Vedder Crossing bridge is more commonly known as the Vedder, but you'll find both used interchangeably by both locals and guide books. Everyone in the area knows the Vedder can mean the whole stretch from the Fraser, along the canal, through Yarrow and Sardis, then up into the Chilliwack river. Go back far enough and you'll find that the spelling somehow changed from Veddar to Vedder. Like anyone cares.

I plan on going up this fall to float wool for springers for the sixth year in a row now. However, I was pondering buying a year lisence this time and fishing for Steelies in the mid winter to spring, how is it? I heard somewhere that some Legend caught 72 in three days once!!

A few decent nates this week but it's slowin down - season ends next week - I am trying to figure a way to get some time this wknd up there but it's not looking good. Licenses are SPENSIVE, but there's not much you can do bout that. For me, it's my time with Dad that matters enough to shell out the unreasonable unjustified completely unrepresented fees.
