Parker-Hale .308 new
      #154975 - 12/14/04 12:30 PM

My father-in-law is sending me a Parker-Hale .308 because he's a great guy and thinks I'm the best son-in-law he has. Being the only one helps, too.

So what can someone tell me about this gun? Other than weapons that start with a "M" (M16, M203, M4, M249) I don't know much about guns. I think this gun is about 30 years old or more. What's it worth? Good for elk?

>.308 is a real great round. You should have no problem taking elk with a 200 grain partition or failsafe. for deer and other small game a 150gr should work. If you reload finding a good round should be pretty easy.

Parker-Hale rifles, though usually of British manufacture, are not especially "collectible". Some are based on sporterized military actions. But most are pretty good shooters, though, and should make a good hunting rifle. I am a fan of 165-gr. bullets for "all-around" use. They work well.

.308 is pleanty of gun for elk. This could start a whole new argument, but like the ladies say size really doesn't matter it is how you use it. I would only use a 200 grain bullet in heavy timber for a .308. The .308 has poor ballistics for this bullet. It can only push it about 2400fps dead on at a 100yds will drop 22 inches at 300 yds and you lose all your knock down power. 165 grains have good ballistics for a .308. That said I shoot a .338 Mag with a .225 grain bullet for Idaho elk, but my wife and daughter have killed them with a .270 and a 140 grain Nosler bullet. Just my observations.

I have a Parker-Hale "mountain rifle" I believe, chambered in the 300 win mag.
Dang good shooter, to bad I don't shoot it more.

I mostly use a 308win for deer/elk hunting, pushing a 165gr max hot hand load out there. 300 yards, an elk is nothing to worrie about!
