I understand that the new Dodge has made great improvements with their transmission. Cummings have been proven for years.

I guy I work with traded in his Ford 350 crew powerstroke on a Chevy Xtra with the Duramax and he likes it better.
The ford had 4 trans put in it and the only prob he has had with the chevy was they recalled the tailgate cable straps and put on heaver ones. He has 45000 miles on it now.

I have an'01 powerstroke no complaints at 81k, it's done everything O.K. love the roomy crew cab. I've known several Ford owners with the powerstroke run mostly stock and none have replaced a tranny under 250k. that said if money was no object I,d probably look hard at an '04 or newer Duramax with the allison tranny.

My dad had a '04 Ford Powerstroke...last time it was in the shop...he told them to keep it shove it where the sun don't shine. Walked out the dealers door and bought the first '05 Ford gasoline pickup he could walk up to.

His brother, My uncle, has a '04 Ford Powerstroke...he never gets to drive his 'cause its never outta the shop. He doesn't have the same funds as my dad and so he is stuck with sittin' in his pickup while its in the shop. Dreaming of driving it.

My dad's other brother, my other uncle, had an '04 Ford Powerstroke and drove it up within 2" of the dealer's front door and told them he'd drive right through the door if they didn't give him something worth a damn.

I'm pretty partial to fords, My dad has never owned anything but them and never had any problems, Ive owned two Chevys and two Fords and had troubles with both chevy's. I wasnt the first owner on the chev's so they were pretty worn. But my latest ford is a powerstroke I bought it new have 75k on it and love it. I've put the motor through the tests with my camper and trailers and havent had any problems with it. I recently entertained buying a new truck and I narrowed it down to Ford and Dodge. In the end The dodge was a lot more in my price range. But I decided the Ford was worth waiting for. Its all a motter of personal opinion. Good Luck.

My dad has had three F250's and a new F350 p-strokes, and has loved them, for what it is worth. I bought his 2000 F250 ps, and love it. It has 90k on it (I put on 10% of those miles myself) and never had it in the shop. I have friends with a dodges and chevy's, and they seem to like theirs too, but they don't fish, so can we really trust their opinion?

The chevy has a much better ride and the interior is allot more user friendly, as far as power to haul anything not real sure. I will be buying one or the other soon myself, I will take my 7800# boat down to the dealers and hooking it up and what ever pulls it up the long hill I live by will be the one I purchace. There are both great trucks, just depends on preference of ride and comfort, IMOP.

I have had good luck with dodges and the cummins motor my 01 was alittle noisy, but the 03 and newer are quited down 75%..... 325hp 600lbs tork, what more do you need.. the turning radius on the dodges are much better than ford or chevy.. just thought I would give you my 2 cents, ther all nice trucks tho!!!! and cost big dollars!!!! so good luck and I'am sure you will be happy with whatever make you decide on.

OK - really dumb question, but does anyone have any data on fuel consumption for Diesel pick-ups? Not DOT websites, or Consumer Reports junk, or 'Ford vs Chevy' schoolyard debate, but actual experience. When my econobox car finally dies, I'll be able to get a truck, and while not the deciding factor, a claim of decent fuel consumption would help get it past the CFO.
Regular driving, not pulling a trailer, not off-road, etc. What is you mileage like?

W4F, my '01 Ford F350 CrewCab, long box, Power Stroke Diesel, AT, 4x4, w/ canopy gets 19-20 mpg @ 65-70 mph in OD.

When hauling my 9'6" ElkHorn camper towing my 21' Alumaweld, I get 14 mpg and don't use OD.

In comparison, the best I ever get from my '04 Chevrolet Gasoline 6.0L 2500 4x4 Crewcab is 15-16. Towing my boat I get 10-11.

Which reminds me - yesterday, I saw a Honda Civic (one of the small ones even) with a receiver and hitch

Rippin lips, I know know what hill you're talkin about .

Frankly, I think it's funny that people try to compare gas mileage on fullsize rigs, granted it's a plus, but really . I drive a gas chevy pickup and my wife drives the suburban. Why worry about gas mileage, people ask me what I get I say I don't know I just fill it up.

Fill it up....pay the bill....drive on...

fwiw,
I have been looking at new trucks for a while now. Even got the wife to admit that it was time for me to get another vehicle. Although she did not mention truck specifically and she was under the influence of diloded. We have a child that will need a car for high school and giving her the Honda makes more sense then buying her a car.

I have noticed something curious when I look at the trucks that are actually on the road.

Dodge trucks are usually bright, shiny, and appear to be garaged and well kept. The receiver usually have a Dodge brakelight in it. Dodge has a better website then the others. Let's me customize a truck and get a ballpark price to shoot for. Wish the other two has as good of a website.

Chevy trucks are somewhat dirty and carrying some load in the bed. The receiver is there but many do not look like they get much usage.

The Ford trucks I see on the road are usually dirty. They usually have a load in the bed and are pulling some kind of trailer.

I've driven a stick for years. Not too fond of automatic transmissions. Even figured out how to float the gears.

Grizz, I'm a Ford fan. In our business, we've had 5 PSD's from 96-02. My '96 had 165K on her, with nary a drop of oil that leaked out of her. My wifes 99 has 140K on it,and it lost 1 injector at 99K, and thanks to the 100K warranty, she got a real good check up from the Ford Dr. for a $100.00. My 02 F350 has 101K on it,and I just serviced the tranny (they've all been juicers), and it was nice and pretty red! Of the 5 rigs, none have had any drive train problems at all. On the (2) 96's, the automatic front hubs were junk and were replaced with manuals. All in all, they've been great pickups. They get used hard, with lots of towing. My crewcab gets 19mpg if I keep it at 60mph (I can't), but when I put mt 10.5' camper and my 20' Intruder behind it I still get 11-12mpg. I'm very happy with that and I can still pull Stevens Pass at 70mph!
