Roosevelt Lake Burbot
      #171114 - 02/21/05 09:12 PM

Spent the weekend fishing the Spokane Arm of Lake Roosevelt with the hopes of catching some walleye. Water was still fairly cold due to low night time temps. The weather was pretty nice but we found that the walleye just were not cooperating - at least for us.

Much to our surprise and good fortune we happened upon a fair concentration of cooperative burbot [fresh water ling] just a short way up lake from the Spokane Arm. Fishing in 50-65 feet of water with 3/4-ounce chatrues colored jigs and twister tail grubs, with a piece of worm, we started getting burbot right off the bat Saturday morning. By noon we were just two short of our limit [had 13] but then the action went cold and we were fishless the rest of the weekend. Gotta admit these are one butt-ugly species, but reports are that they are really fine eating just like their saltwater cousins.

Denali joined us on the water Sunday but we drew a big goose-egg.

Grizz and new friend Mike [forgot his moniker] stopped by camp briefly Saturday night to report their lack of success - they had one good sized trout for the day. Mike also joined us on Sunday.

Here are some pics of the three of us [Adam/Idahewes, Marty/Dustyreels, and Dean/BorntoFish].

Adam, Idahewes, will need to provide the culinary report since he took the 6-7 pounds of filets home with him. From what I understand, they're just as good as their saltwater cousins.

Glad you guys had a good trip, and had nice weather.

We have them out here, and another "version" with a real long tail called Eelpout. Ive caught 2, never ate them but they are refered to as poor mans lobster out here!

When I was a kid back in Wisconsin, I recall seeing some of these caught in open water, as well as through the ice. Don't recall anyone ever keeping them to eat.

Jim, I think you're right. Then you can toss in the mudpuppie for an ugly stringer.

But some have a really long tail, longer than the fish. They wrap around your dang arm hah!

They have the Eelpout festival in Walker, Mn every year. Huge fishing party.
