This is a 19 1/2# silver salmon I am mounting. Its the first salmon I have done. I still have to attach the reproduction head I molded for it and paint it.

Here is a picture of half the reproduction head I made for the silver using bondo to make a mold and bondo thinned with resin to cast the head. I used fiberglass and resin to back the thinned bondo cast before demolding. As you can see by the pictures I was able to pick up every detail even where the line was wrapped around the hook of the upper jaw.
I also made a mouth mold using the same method and will cast that soon.
The third picture is of the paints and shimmers I will use to receate the actual colors of the fish.
P.s somehow the photo upload washed the detail in the pictures out,but take my word for it even the straiations behind the eye were picked up.

Well, I painted it tonight. Just got to mount it on a nice piece of wood next. For my first salmon I think it turned out pretty good but I will find out for sure at the tackle shop after christmas.

The next one I am going to try molding the head in one piece. It took alot of time to glue the halves of the head together and model the inner mouth castings in place. I am also going to make sure the head fits nicely on the foam body before mounting the skin. I had to take quit a bit of material off the backside to make the head fit. The missing part in the tail is from a healed seal bite. I could have covered that with silkspan but being a natural feature of the fish at the time it was caught I left it. I would repair splits in the fins that were caused by rough handling after it was caught, this salmons fins were in good shape though. Next fish I am going to try a more translucent silver for tipping the shiny scales on the back the silver I used was a little to bright so I sprayed a light coat of green to tone them down a little. I am going to put more clay in the bases of the pectorial fins before I mount the skin next time. There was more shrinkage in this area then I thought there would be.
Thats all I can think of right now but I am open to suggestions.
Let me know the things that are most important to you and your mounts. What do you notice about any mounts anywhere that you dont like?

Very, very nice mount. Paint looks great:) I have 4 steelhead, 1 king and 1 coho on my wall, 3 skin mount and 3 replica, the replicas I have are from before things got good, this one looks as good as my skinmounts, way to go!

That is an impressive job for a first mount. I'd be proud to have a trophy like that hanging on my wall.
