I hung a bird feeder outside my new window in my shop in February, the black eyed junkos found it immediatly. Then came a song sparrow then a golden crowned sparrow. I did not know the names of these birds (but they looked familiar) went to the library and checked out a book. Hey now I feel informed because I can identify these common birds. Then a bird showed up that I have never seen in all my 57+ years as a Washington resident. My wife looked him/her up and (the suspense builds) it was a Scrub Jay, a handsome bird.
We are in Tacoma Wa. on the hill above downtown Tacoma.
I'm bringing this to your attention because I noticed an old post from someone in southern Wash. regarding the possible sighting of a scrub jay. By the way he visits us at least once a day.

That is indeed a handsome bird! I have not seen one around here, and we have some oaks here and there.

I have been seeing scrub jay's for awhile now. I have been putting bird seed out regularly and there are about 4 or 5 of them here. I didn't know what they were either, until Bucksalmon told me. They really are awesome. So are the squirrels, who fight the jays for the food.
