Honestly how often do you change your oil? new
      #170647 - 02/19/05 07:43 AM

How often?
You may choose only one
2000-3000 miles
3000-4000 miles
4000-5000 miles
5000 and over
Who does it?
You may choose only one
Yourself
Pay somebody to do it
A little of both

Sounds like about what I do. Do you believe the hype about the longer running oils? I personally think the oil can handle it, but you need to keep the engine clean on the inside, I think that is the real key. On the other hand I don't think that oil filters can make it for the longer periods even if they say they do.

If you saw what I see on a daily basis you would be religous about changing your oil! I have seen a V8 that takes 6qts of oil have about three or four blobs come frome the oil pan. Factory filters on cars/trucks with 30-40,000 miles on them and the customer can't under stand why the need a new engine.

Many times I'll change my oil at 2K if I've been towing quite a bit. Just depends on how hard I've been driving that'll determine my next oil change. When I run synthetic in a car, I may go upto 5K, depending on driving conditions.

Had a guy come in with a mudline to about mid-door on his 4x4 Ram.... He was complaning about a grinding noise from his rear diff., tech pops off the fill plug and out comes a frothy mess of water/gear oil. Sir it would seem while you were out mudding you contaminated your front and rear diff assy's as well as your transfer case. We would encourage you to service/replace them a this time! Guy declined the repair and drove off with a howling limited slip rear diff and god knows what else came apart after that.

Anyone ever seen what happens when you fill a 35gal diesel tank with gas?

Ya, when I worked in Nashville in a scrap yard as an oiler, I was sent out to figure out why one of the Detriot's wasn't running right. I drop the fuel filters and holy cow it was all clear and gassy. No wonder it wasn't running right. That's what happens when the operators were allowed to fill their cranes. He put in almost a hundred gallons.

After I bought my commuter Honda '92 used, i got to reading the owners manual and it suggests changing the oil every 7500, in todays world that seems like a long time. I let it go to about 5k. 300,000 and counting. NO smoke yet!

Talk about a sore subject! Caveman is down right ANAL about getting the oil changed at 3000. Gives me all kinds of grief if I don't race right down and get it done.

The oil companies love the 3000 mile oil changers, think of all the money you're lining their pockets with.

The 3000 mile oil change is a thing of the past. Todays oils are FAR superior than they used to be. Changing oil at 3000 miles is a waste of time, money, and a limited natural resource.

What was the service/repair - just to change the fluids, or did you say they needed to be torn down? I can see someone getting spooked at the prospect of tearing into two pumpkins and a tcase, but the LSD sounds like it did need heellllllllp.

What I don't get is that it's a simple enough task to raise the breathers above the waterline, yet no one but dedicated off roaders seem to do it.

Every 3000-4000 on the engine, OEM filter. I replace the diff fluid probably three to four times a year and the trans/tcase at least once a year. I mainly do the diffs that often to keep the air lockers happy.

Har har.

Actually I got that rec on the Marlin Crawler board, too. They're out - sitting on the floor out, so they don't fubar the seals by resting on them.

BiggerFH when I get home.

My back feels better than it did the day after snowmachining when I tried in the first place, so that may lend some more advantage, too.

I'm in Anchorage, live on the hillside, work in midtown. I got it out the other night. A good night's sleep and a swift kick with my Limmers got it moving. Thanks, though - I appreciate it. Want me to keep you in mind when I attempt to put dual tcases in?

Supposed to go see local gearman "Oddball" (familiar with him? aka Curtis) tonight about taking the rest of the locker apart to inspect. Stupid thing won't engage before I warm the diff up 10 miles. Now that it's out I've been hitting it with a compressor and it locks every time, but sounds like it's wheezing. Probably just orings, but an otherwise perfectly good ARB is an expensive thing to tear into without manuals or guidance when you've only picked at the guts of a blown LockRite before.

SundayMoney, I agree. There isn't any technical reason why oil needs to be changed at 3000 miles.

With as much as I drive back and forth on ol' I5, i'd be changing the oil every 2 - 3 weeks. Thats alot of money, even doing yourself. Over the life of the engine i'd have saved enough for a new motor. 300K+ on my four bangin honda civic. Change it every 3 months or about 12 - 15k. Manual says 7500. No smoke, good compression, purrs like a little kitty. No sludgy goopy stuff comes out either. Works for me. I know a guy who buys cars at auction for 300 or so, never changes anything in the car, oil, antifreeze, plugs....nothing. He usually gets a couple years outta them before they go belly up. Then just goes back to the auction. To each his own.

Wix filters are the best I've seen. Had a page bookmarked on my old computer that an enginer did some tests with different oil filters. The O.E.M.'s are good. not quite as much paper on average as the Wix. NAPA gold and Carquest premium are Wix filters. Stay away from Fram! Junk! Personally I like Chevron Delo motor oil but any good name brand oil is OK. If you make a lot of short trips you need to change your oil more often than if you mostly go long distances (1/2 hour plus) or if the rig sits idle for long periods of time. The long trips gets oil up to tempature and boils off the water, acids, ect that collect in the engine.
